Frontiers in Integrative Biological
Research (FIBR): Causes and Consequences of Recombination |
| Research Fields: |
The causes and consequences of genetic
recombination. Research will be focused on Daphnia pulex , a
freshwater microcrustacean, and its unique life cycle (cyclical
parthenogenesis). Projects will range widely utilizing field and
laboratory techniques and spanning a number of subdisciplines in
biology. |

Student interns will spend their first summer on the Indiana University
campus, and their second summer at either the Kellogg Biological
Station, the University of Illinois, or the University of New Hampshire. |

Students will be expected to participate in research for at least 40
hours per week. Students may not enroll in classes or hold outside
employment during the term of their internship.

| Eligibility: |
Participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United
States and have a strong interest in research. Applicants must be in
their sophomore year of their undergraduate program. The program is
designed to encourage and enhance the participation of students from
schools without large research programs and members of minorities
currently underrepresented in the sciences, but all applications will be
considered. |

| Compensation: |
Housing: Students will be housed in dormitory accommodations at
IU with undergraduates participating in other summer programs in the
Department of Biology.
Stipend: Each student will receive a $3,200 stipend plus
travel expenses to and from the University. Room and board will be
provided by the program. |
