Eligibility:
  1. Undergraduate juniors and seniors who come from underrepresented backgrounds, i.e., Hispanics, Native Americans, African Americans, and Pacific Islanders.
  2. Enrollment during the previous year in an accredited four year university.
  3. U.S. citizenship, Permanent Residence.
  4. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, and
  5. Successful completion of 75 semester units toward a bachelor's degree.

Before you begin our online application, you may want to
 

  1. Choose a faculty member from your school to write a letter of recommendation for you, and a research mentor (if you have research experience) to do the same. You can also print out the Letter of Reference form and deliver it to your professors so that they can submit them on your behalf.
  2. Prepare a personal statement that describes the area in which you would like to conduct research if selected for this program. Be as specific as possible about research projects of particular interest to you. Be sure to include what you hope to accomplish through participation in this program and your academic career goals. Your personal statement should not exceed two double spaced pages. You will be able to copy and paste the text of your personal statement into the online application.

Compensation:
  • $4000 Stipend

Additional Notes: The explicit objective of the program is to help prepare, motivate, and support students who aspire to obtain a Ph.D. and pursue a career in research.  Each student is paired with a faculty mentor who conducts research in the biomedical sciences (particularly cardiovascular and respiratory research) in which they have a specific interest, participate in weekly seminars offered by UA faculty on health issues disproportionately affecting minority populations, attend weekly workshops on graduate school preparation and presentation skill development, attend a GRE Prep Workshop, and present their work at the University of Arizona's end of summer research symposium.
