Liberty Partnerships Program
|
| The Liberty Partnerships Program at Barnard College is a state funded
program. It is an educational and social support program designed to provide academic and
counseling services to students primarily in School District III, but also students in
other districts, who are in need of assistance to complete their high school education.
The program believes that in order to positively affect a student's academic growth, one
must take into consideration every aspect of the child's development. The Liberty Program, therefore, provides a variety of services for the student participants. The main service provided is tutoring. The student come to Barnard twice a week. Students receive individualized tutoring with the assistance of a tutor-counselor(usually an undergraduate college student). The role of the tutor-counselor is to provide the students with academic assistance and supportive counseling. In some respect, the tutor-counselor serves as a big brother or big sister to the students. The students' academic growth is monitored by the administration of the program. During the week, the program provides counseling services and workshops. Each student meets with a counselor to discuss their progress in school and their personal development. The workshops focus on the challenges Liberty students meet on a daily basis, the preparation required for college admission, and career exploration. The Liberty Program provides an array of enrichment activities. Enrichment classes in dance, art, drama and/or computer are held during the semester. On a monthly basis, the students have access to the Barnard gym where the students can play basketball and volleyball. The students have the opportunity to bowl in Barnard's bowling alley. The students are also taken on trips that are fun and educational. The Liberty Program has established a partnership with the Goddard Riverside Options Program and the Girls Scout of Greater New York. The Options Program assist the 12th grade students with the college application process and hold workshop for their parents. The Girl Scout have workshops on Barnard's campus once a month and eligible students are invited to join. Lastly, the Liberty Program at Barnard College has open communication with the students' schools. This gives us the opportunity to monitor the students' progress and to provide needed support. |
