Searching CLIO
CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for materials added to the Columbia University Libraries since 1981.

For a Keyword search, you must use Boolean searching - that is, use and, or or not between the terms, and quotes for a phrase
For a Keyword or Title search, you can limit to books in the Barnard library using the More Limits or Post Limits options

ABSEES: American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies
Covers research in all disciplines relating to Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union published since 1990 in the United States and Canada. Includes citations for journal articles, books, book chapters, book reviews, dissertations, government publications, and more.

African Studies
A searchable index to publications and unpublished manuscripts about and from Africa in history, literature, music, archaeology, fine arts, business, and the other social sciences. This database is a composite of 17 other databases, some of which go back to the early 1980s.

Bibliography of Asian Studies
A comprehensive bibliographic index to articles and other published materials on all fields of Asian Studies.

ProQuest Direct
An interdisciplinary database representing titles found in ABI/INFORM, Periodicals Abstracts, and Newspaper Abstracts, indexing from 1971 to the present, with full-text back to 1995. Select "Research Library" to search scholarly journals.

ProQuest Historical Newspapers
Contains full-text articles from the Chicago Tribune (from 1890), LA Times (from 1881), New York Times (from 1851), Wall Street Journal (from 1889), and Washington Post (from 1877).

Indexes more than 350 key international, English-language periodicals in the social sciences.

Social Sciences Citation Index
Index and abstracts for journal articles in the social sciences, from 1965 to the present, with links to full text, and cited reference lists for articles in the database. Useful for tracing where a paper was cited.

Searching the Web

Google

Of all the search engines, Google has one of the best systems for ranking results. It has a system called PageRank that makes sure the most relevant results are at the top of the list. For each page, it counts the number of times other pages link to it, and that determines how high up it should rank in the results list.
Use the Advanced search
Use the second box down for a phrase
Combine a single word in the top box with a phrase in the second box
Request 100 results per page
Set your preferences to 100 results per page

Some other search engines to try: Hotbot, Alltheweb, Yahoo (which allows you to search for pages from a specific country), and always use the Advanced search option

Web Resources

BUBL Link "A national information service for the higher education community" from the United Kingdom. Arrangement of resources by Subject; see for example Politics. Excellent resource that brings together a wide variety of useful sites on a particular topic. Browse by subject, or search the site.

Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO) is a comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs.

Council on Foreign Relations Web site includes full-text articles, transcripts of speeches and testimony, and reports designed to provide the interested public with reliable, clear, nonpartisan information on key international issues.

Country Studies
Information about countries of the world provided by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress.

Institute for Global Communications (IGC) The Website of the nonprofit IGC offers progressive groups a place on the Internet to exchange information. Includes separate sections: PeaceNet; EcoNet, WomensNet, and AntiRacismNet.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Website of the IMF has articles, reports and working papers, on economic issues, policy analysis, countries and news.

Lehman Library: International Relations Resources This subject guide lists both restricted sites and web sites for researching International Affairs. A good starting place if you don't want to be overwhelmed with possible resources.

Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) Reports and articles on the Middle East, translated from Arabic, Farsi, and Hebrew, as well as original analysis of political, ideological, intellectual, social, cultural, and religious trends in the Middle East.

State Department (United States) A wealth of information is made available on this site, about international relations, countries and regions of the world, the U.S. State Department and international organizations.

United Nations Has materials about global issues on the UN agenda, key UN documents, statements of the Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General, etc.

World Bank Group Information about the activites of the World Bank

World News Connection (WNC) A foreign news service of the U.S. government that offers an extensive array of translated and English-language news and information, covering socioeconomic, political, scientific, technical, and environmental issues and events.

Finding Foreign News Sources

ABYZ News Links is a portal to online news sources from around the world. It is primarily composed of newspapers but also includes many broadcast stations, internet services, magazines, and press agencies.

The Europa Yearbooks (Barnard Library call numbers are given in the list of Reference Books above) list the newspapers published in each country, in print as well as online.

Lexis-Nexis contains many foreign newspapers in full-text, but it is necessary to know the name of the newspaper in order to search for it, as they are not grouped by country. Select the Guided News Search, the World News category, and then the appropriate region. After that, it is possible to examine the Source List to see which newspapers are available.

Refdesk.com lists the major online newspapers for each country.

Finding Governments' Web pages

Governments on the WWW A comprehensive database of governmental institutions on the World Wide Web: parliaments, ministries, offices, law courts, embassies, city councils, public broadcasting corporations, central banks, multi-governmental institutions etc. Includes also political parties.

International Constitutional Law Provides the constitutions of a huge number of countries.

EndNote

EndNote bibliographic software is available for downloading, free of charge, to all current Barnard and Columbia students from the AcIS software server at http://www.columbia.edu/acis/software/endnote.

EndNote allows you to

search for citations in library catalogs and databases using the EndNote software, or export results into EndNote from remote catalogs and databases
store the citations in libraries you create within EndNote
search through the citations you have stored using keyword searches
cite them in papers and bibliographies using any citation format you choose using the EndNote "Cite While You Write" feature

Consult the page EndNote at Columbia for more details, the EndNote Manual (particularly Chapter 3) that is downloaded to your computer along with the program, and the online tipsheets that deal with specific topics.

Using EndNote to Find References and Use Them in a Paper

For each project, open an EndNote library where you will put your references. The default location for saving libraries is C:\Program files\Endnote\

Searching CLIO from within EndNote

go to Tools - Connect - CLIO

search in Any Field, not Keywords

references are put in a buffer and then you are asked if you want to copy them to your library

to open up a reference, double-click on it

if a book or journal is available online, the URL is in the EndNote record and you can click on it.

Searching Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) from within EndNote

both EndNote and Web of Science are made by Thomson ISI, so they work well together

go to Tools - Connect - Web of Science SSCI (ISI)

search for your topic in Title/Keyword/Abstract

if the article is available online, the URL will be in the EndNote reference

Exporting Citations from ProQuest into EndNote

this is one of the few databases that is set up to export into EndNote, at the moment

search for articles in ProQuest and check the boxes to the left of those to be exported

click on "View Marked Articles" at the top, then on "Export Citations into EndNote, ProCite, RefWorks or Reference Manager" and "Export Directly to ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager"

the EndNote “Select A Reference Library” dialog box will open up, and you can select the library you want to save to

Using Cite While You Write

keep both EndNote and Word open while you work on your paper, and open the EndNote library you want to use
choose the style you need to use for the paper; go to Edit - Output Styles - Open Style Manager, check the box, and the style will be added to the short drop-down list of styles
the style used for political science and the other social sciences is the APA (American Psychological Association) style - for more information see the Bedford Handbook online by Diana Hacker
when you are ready to insert a citation into your paper, on the Word menu bar, use Tools - EndNote 7 - Find Citation (the EndNote tools are added to Word when you download EndNote)
