ProQuest Direct -- full-text, citations, and abstracts from periodicals in many disciplines plus major U.S. newspapers.

Reader's Guide Retrospective -- citations to articles in popular and general-interest periodicals, 1890-1982.

Readers' Guide Full Text -- citations, abstracts, and fulltext for articles in popular and general-interest periodicals, 1983 to the present.

Historical Abstracts -- citations and abstracts for publications related to world history, excluding the U.S. and Canada, from 1450 to the present.

Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) Collection of Ethnography -- full-text materials on the world's cultures.

United Nations Common Database (UNCDB) -- statistical tables covering many topics for countries worldwide.

E-JOURNALS

Many scholarly journals are available on the Web. The journal often is included in a searchable collection of journals supplied as a package by the publisher or by another vendor. These collections are included on the list of Databases (Reference Works & Indexes) on the Barnard Library home page. If you have a particular journal that you want to access electronically, enter the title in CLIO, omitting the initial article (a, an, the, la, le, un, etc.). In the Quick Limits box below the Search For field, select Electronic Journals/Magazines/Serials, the click search. If we have an online subscription or database access, one or more links will be provided in the record.

Columbia: Electronic Data Service -- operated jointly by the Columbia University Libraries and Academic Information Systems (AcIS) to support instruction and research that involve numeric and geo-spatial data resources.

County and City Data Book -- statistical tables on numerous subjects by small geographic areas.

iPoll -- poll/survey questions and responses.

Monthly Bulletin of Statistics (UN) -- statistics from the United Nations.

CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for materials added to the Columbia University Libraries since 1981.  


Other Library Catalogs

Those with Columbia ID have access to the libraries of the Columbia Law School, the Jewish Theological Seminary, Teachers’ College, and Union Theological Seminary, but they are not included in CLIO. CUID also provides access to the libraries of New York University. Anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in New York is entitled to a New York Public Library card. BBC News World Edition: Country Profiles
Profiles provide an "instant guide" to news, history, politics, event timelines, and economic background of world countries. Presents country overviews, basic facts, Web links, and details on leaders and media. Includes news stories and audio and video clips from the BBC archives. Foreign Policy in Focus (FPIF)
An "international network of [hundreds of] policy analysts and advocates," Foreign Policy in Focus (FPIF) is "committed to advancing a citizen-based foreign policy agenda--one that is fundamentally rooted in citizen initiatives and movements." The site contains FPIF articles, reports, and commentary. Searchable; and browsable by region and topic (including drug control, environment, human rights, military, terrorism, and women). Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI)
FPRI researches "pressing issues — the war on terrorism, developments in the Middle East, nuclear proliferation in South Asia, relations with China, Russia, and Japan — and long-term questions, such as the roles of religion and ethnicity in international politics." This site features articles, transcripts, audio and video clips, and publications from FPRI. Articles are browsable by subject, author, date, or title. Not searchable. Institute for Policy Studies (IPS)
This "multi-issue progressive think tank" has "worked with social movements to forge viable and sustainable policies to promote democracy, justice, human rights, and diversity" throughout the world. The site provides reports, audio, and project updates in areas of democracy and fairness (including U.S. presidential election issues), global justice, and peace and security. Projects include bringing Augusto Pinochet to justice and minimizing "the effects of human trafficking, modern-day slavery, and worker exploitation." Non-governmental Organizations Research Guide
"An extensive but by no means exhaustive database of some of the larger and more influential NGOs operating internationally." Listings include those that focus on "environmentally sustainable development, human rights, or women in development; produce publications of research value to university users and policymakers; and are large, influential organizations as demonstrated by affiliations with other organizations, directory listings, and currently maintained web sites." UN News Centre: Sudan
News and background information from the United Nations (UN) and its agencies about Sudan, particularly the humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region. Includes a map of Sudan, images, statistics, a timeline, and links to information from specific UN agencies and programs. In English and French. TraCCC: Transnational Crime & Corruption Center
This center is "devoted to teaching, research, training and formulating policy advice in transnational crime, corruption and terrorism." Much of the work "has focused on the analysis of transnational crime and corruption in the countries which constitute the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe." The site provides descriptions of research with links to documents and related information in areas such as trafficking in persons, money laundering, corruption, and transnational crime. Trafficking in Human Beings
This U.S. government site presents an annotated directory of official texts, articles, publications, and other links about smuggling immigrants, child prostitution and other forms of sexual slavery, and other topics. U.S. Department of State: International Information Programs (IIP)
IIP is an office of the U.S. Department of State which "conducts, develops, and distributes public diplomacy materials in support of U.S. foreign policy objectives." This searchable site offers information on country, regional, and international issues (terrorism, arms control, sustainable development, etc.); a daily press service (Washington File); publications; and more. EndNote bibliographic software is available for downloading, free of charge, to all current Barnard and Columbia students from the AcIS software server at http://www.columbia.edu/acis/software/endnote.

EndNote allows you to

  • search for citations in library catalogs and databases using the EndNote software, or export results into EndNote from remote catalogs and databases
  • store the citations in libraries you create within EndNote
  • search through the citations you have stored using keyword searches
  • cite them in papers and bibliographies using any citation format you choose using the EndNote "Cite While You Write" feature
