Reference Books

Encyclopedias, dictionaries and other reference books can provide useful background and factual information. They can also provide bibliographies that lead you to relevant books and articles. The reference books in this list are available in the Barnard Library reference area on the second floor. Ask at the reference desk for additional reference books.

CLIO: the Library Catalog

CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for books and other materials added to the Columbia University Libraries since 1981.  

• You can enter CLIO from the Barnard Library home page or from the Columbia University LibraryWeb
• Help with searching (called "search tips") is available on the bottom of the opening search screen
• CLIO can be searched by author, title, subject, keyword 
• Primary sources can also be found in CLIO; e.g. churchill winston 1871-1947 correspondence

Other Library Catalogs

Please note that Teachers’ College, Jewish Theological Seminary, and the Law Library’s holdings are not listed in CLIO and that they have their own online library catalogs. The holdings of the Health Sciences Library as well as Union Theological Seminary's are listed in CLIO.  CATNYP is the online catalog of the NYPL research library.  There are links to Other Library Catalogs  on the Barnard Library's Home Page as well as from CU LibraryWeb. Some European library catalogs are included in the A-Z listing of databases, such as the, Bibliografia Nazionale, Bibliografia Nacional Espanola, Bibliographe Nationalie Francaise, Oesterreichische Bibliographie and Gabriel, Gateway to Europe's National Libraries and more.

Interdisciplinary and contains many full text articles, from 1971 and usually 1988 for full-text.

JSTOR 
JSTOR means journal storage and is a large group of more than 300 journals in many disciplines including history. It has the full text of the journal beginning from volume 1 up to the last 3-5 years. It is searchable as a whole or by journal title or subject area. History journals include Journal of Modern History, Renaissance Quarterly, Journal of the History of Ideas and more. Political Science, Sociology and other subject areas are included.
Useful for finding both primary or secondary articles.

Lexis Nexis Academic 
Major newspaper database. Coverage is mid-nineteen eighties to present. Interdisciplinary database of over 1,800 sources including full text articles from newspapers, including international newspapers, wire services and other sources.

Nation Digital Archive
Searchable full-text and page images of a major U.S. journal of left/liberal opinion, 1865-1999.

Nineteenth Century Masterfile
Indexes selected 19th century periodicals including Harper's, New York Times. Choose Pooles to include British journals

Oral histories, worldwide in English.

PCI: Periodicals Contents Index

Past Masters
Several searchable full-text collections of writings by key philosophers and thinkers from ancient times to the present. Aristotle, Wittgenstein and Rousseau and many others are included.

Poole's Index to Periodical Literature, 1802-1881. 6 vols. plus index. Barnard Reference: A13 .P7

ProQuest Historical Newspapers
Full-text and full-image articles from the New York Times, 1851-1991, Wall Street Journal, 1889-1985, Los Angeles Times, 1881-1984, Washington Post, 1877-1985 and the Chicago Tribune, 1890-1946.

Readers' Guide Retrospective

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan will borrow books or obtain photocopies of items that are not available at the Barnard or Columbia Libraries with no charge to the patron. Union Catalogs can identify and locate materials not available in the CU Library system. Eureka and WorldCat are two union catalogs available on the main listing of databases.
