USING CLIO TO FIND BOOKS AND JOURNALS

Searching CLIO
  • Title search: leave off the initial article (The, An, La, etc.)
  • Author search: put last name, then first name
  • Keyword search: you must use and, or or not between the terms, or quotes for a phrase
  • Uniform Title search: only use for anonymous works, to find translations and editions
  • Keyword search with relevancy ranking: do not use and, or or not between the terms, but put + in front of terms that must be in the record; if + is not used, or is assumed
  • Limiting to books at Barnard: use the More Limits or Post Limits options
  • Call numbers for the Bible and works on religion start with the letters BL through BX.  For an overview of the Library of Congress Classification Outline click here.
  • Other library catalogs useful for your research include those of Jewish Theological Seminary Library (Aleph) and New York Public Library Research Libraries (CATNYP).  There are links to these and other library catalogs on the Catalogs list on CU LibraryWeb.
  • The subject heading in CLIO for works on the Hebrew Bible is BIBLE. O.T.  Some useful subdivisions might include:
    • BIBLE O T--CHRONOLOGY
    • BIBLE O T--COMMENTARIES
    • BIBLE O T--CONCORDANCES
    • BIBLE O T--CRITICISM INTERPRETATION ETC
    • BIBLE O T--CRITICISM TEXTUAL

    Other useful subject headings include

    • JUDAISM--DOCTRINES
    • JUDAISM--HISTORY

USING INDEXES TO FIND CITATIONS TO PERIODICAL ARTICLES

On the Databases (Reference Works & Indexes) list on the Barnard Library homepage, there are over 300 indexes, databases and catalogs which can enable you to find citations for journal articles and books, and also the full text of many articles.

  • Read the descriptions of the indexes to find out which ones might be the most useful for your research.
  • Search by keyword or subject to find some germane citations
  • When you have found a citation for an article you would like to read, click on "e-link" next to the citation to find out if it is online, or do a title search in CLIO using the title of the journal in which the article appears.

The indexes and databases listed below will probably be the most relevant to your research.

   ATLA Religion Database
  • Citations and abstracts for articles in religion periodicals and other publications
  • To e-mail results to yourself, click on the "E-mail" button at the top

   Humanities Abstracts

  • Citations and abstracts for articles, book reviews, etc. in archaeology, art, classics, film, folklore, journalism, linguistics, music, performing arts, philosophy, religion and world history and literature, published from 1984 to the present
  • Change to MLA (or another database within FirstSearch) by clicking on the drop-down box next to "Search in database" and repeat your search

   MLA Bibliography

  • Citations for articles, dissertations, books etc. on literature, linguistics, language, and folklore, published from 1963 to the present
  • This database includes many books, book chapters, and dissertations; if you wish to find journal articles, limit Document Type to "Journal"

   JSTOR

  • A full text database of articles from over 320 scholarly journals, from each journal’s first issue up to 3 to 5 years ago
  • Only the science and social science articles have abstracts, so searching in the title is the most direct search for articles in humanities journals; searching for a term in the full text of an article will often find too many irrelevant articles

   ProQuest Direct
  • Full text database of articles from newspapers, magazines and scholarly journals
  • For scholarly journals, click on "Databases selected" at top, clear all databases and select PA Research II Periodicals, click on "Continue" at top, and select Advanced Search.
