CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for the Barnard & Columbia Libraries. CLIO can be searched by author, title, subject and keyword.  Help for searching CLIO is available on the Web CLIO opening screen.  Click on: "Connect via WWW". 

Sample Searches:
Title search
: leave off the initial article (the, an, la, etc.)

Author search
: put last name, then first name
author: juviler peter

Finding a book about a person or a subject: start with a Keyword search using the most distinctive words associated with the topic. Then look for useful subject headings and do a Subject search.

Keyword search
: use and, or not between the terms, or quotes for a phrase, and use ? for truncation (to find variant endings of a word)
keyword: sanctions and cuba
keyword: "latin american" and media
keyword: india and child? and (poor or poverty)

Subject search: use Library of Congress (LC) subject headings
subject: albright madeleine
subject: china politics and government
subject: chile foreign relations united states

Note that although the Barnard Library is in Lehman Hall, CLIO location Lehman means the Social Sciences library at Columbia; Barnard books have the location Barnard.

 

DATABASES & INDEXES: for locating periodical &journal articles

On the Databases (reference works & indexes) list, which you can access from the Barnard Library home page, there are links to many indexes which give citations, abstracts and some full-text for articles in various disciplines. Many databases have e-links which will search to see if the full-text of a particular item is available online through CULibrary Web. If you are unable to locate an item full-text search CLIO directly for the journal title. 

The following indexes and databases will probably be the most relevant to your research:

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
Abstracts of books and articles from professional journals and major news magazines, devoted to North American and International Politics, 1976 to present.

International Political Science Abstracts
Abstracts for articles in the field of political science, including public administration, political theory and international relations, published in journals and yearbooks worldwide, 1989 to present.

PAIS International (Public Affairs Information Service database)
Citations and abstracts for articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, book chapters, and statistical directories about public affairs, 1972 to present.

Social Sciences Full Text
Abstracts for journals in anthropology, business, community health, economics, foreign affairs, geography, international relations, law and criminology, sociology and social history, 1983 to present.

International Bibliography of the Social Sciences
Citations for articles from over 100 countries in more than 90 languages, in the disciplines of anthropology, economics, political science and sociology, from 1951 to present.

ProQuest Direct
Full-text articles and abstracts from newspapers and periodicals in many disciplines, international affairs, law, psychology, public affairs, sociology, women's studies, from 1988 to the present. For scholarly journals, select "Interdisciplinary-Research Library" from the drop-down menu. The advanced search is recommended.

Hispanic American Periodical Index Online HAPI
Includes citations to materials, citations to materials about Latin America as well as U.S. Hispanics,1970 to present.

Historical Abstracts
Citations to articles in world history excluding the U.S. & Canada. Covers from 1450  to present, articles, books and dissertations, published from 1982 to present.

Humanities Full Text
General humanities, Includes history as well as archaeology, art classics, film, folklore, journalism, linguistics, music, performing arts and religion, 1984 to present.

Index Islamicus
Index to materials on Islam, the Middle East and the Muslim world from periodicals, conference proceedings and books.

Index to Legal Periodicals
Covers all areas of jurisprudence, recent court decisions, new legislation and original scholarship.

JSTOR, the Scholarly Journal Archive
An archive of Full text articles from a large number of scholarly journals in anthropology, African studies, education, history, philosophy, political science, population studies, sociology and others from each journal's first issue but excluding the most current, usually 3-5 years. Includes World Politics,  Political Science Quarterly and many more titles.

Project Muse
Full text articles from more than 200 scholarly journals published by Johns Hopkins University Press in the humanities and social sciences. Included are Africa Today, Human Rights Quarterly and man more titles. Includes most recent years only.

NEWS RESOURCES

ABYZ News Links  A portal to online news sources from around the world. It is primarily composed of newspapers but also includes many broadcast stations, internet services, magazines, and press agencies. 

Economist Intelligence Unit Includes country reports for background information, regional newsletters and more.

E-News Online News Resources Links to a variety of media resources world wide.

The Europa Yearbooks (Barnard Library call numbers are given in the list of Reference Books above) list the newspapers published in each country, in print as well as online.

Factiva Full text business information, Also includes general news and current events.

FactSearch Contains full-text statistical statements concerning current social, economic, health and environmental issues. The texts are excerpted from more than 1,00 periodicals, 1984 to present.

Foreign Press Translations Lists the Lehman Library's subscriptions in paper, microfiche and online to foreign press translations.

Latin American Database Consists of three weekly online news digests (SourceMex, NotiCen and NotiSur) covering Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, 1980-1982 to present.

Lexis-NexisAcademic Contains many foreign newspapers in full-text, but they are not grouped by country, so it is necessary to know the name of a newspaper in order to search for it.  Select the Guided News Search and the World News category, and then the appropriate region.  After that, it is possible to examine the Source List to see which newspapers are available, coverage generally begins in mid-1980s

Refdesk.com lists the major online newspapers for each country.

Vanderbilt Television News Archive Abstracts of news broadcasts from 1968 to present. Includes ABC, CBS, NBC, PBX, Fox and CNN.

World News Connection (WNC)  A foreign news service of the U.S. government that offers an extensive array of translated and English-language news and information, covering socioeconomic, political, scientific, technical, and environmental issues and events.

 

FINDING GOVERNMENTS' WEB PAGES

Governments on the WWW  A comprehensive database of governmental institutions on the World Wide Web: parliaments, ministries, offices, law courts, embassies, city councils, public broadcasting corporations, central banks, multi-governmental institutions etc.  Includes also political parties.

International Constitutional Law  Provides the constitutions of a huge number of countries.
