CLIO TIPS
 
CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for materials (books, media, electronic resources, etc.) added to the Columbia University Libraries since 1981.  
  • For keyword searches, AND is automatically inserted between term. You may also use OR or NOT between the terms, or quotes for a phrase.
  • For a title search, leave off the initial article (the, an, le, etc.)
  • For an author search, put last name, then first name
  • You can retrieve materials only in English using the Pre-set Limits or Post Limits options

To find PRIMARY SOURCES, use these terms in your search: ARCHIVES, BIOGRAPHY (this includes autobiographies), CORRESPONDENCE, DIARIES, INTERVIEWS, SOURCES. Enter them as "any of these" in a Guided Keyword search, selecting Subject from the In: menu.

ONLINE INDEXES AND DATABASES: ARTICLES & MORE

  • Access these indexes and databases from the Find Databases interface
  • Using these resources to find journal articles is sometimes a two-step process; first, find citations in the index, and second, click on to find the full text online or do a Journal Title search in CLIO to find out how to locate the full text online or a print copy.   

Biological Abstracts -- abstracts to periodicals in biology and the life sciences. Provides access to biological and medical research findings, clinical studies, and discoveries of new organisms.

BioMed Central an independent publisher in England, provides free access to biomedical research publications.

CINAHL -- provides authoritative coverage of the literature related to nursing and allied health.

Contemporary Women's Issues -- full-text articles and reports about women from U.S. and international sources.

Evidence-based medicine reviews allows you to search simultaneously the four Evidence Based Medicine Reviews databases.

Genderstats : a database of gender statistics -- Compiles data on key gender topics from a variety of national and international sources.

General science full text -- bibliographic indexes (coverage starting 1984), full text (starting 1995), plus graps, charts, diagrams, photos, and illustrations.

Google scholar -- Retrieves references to books, abstracts, and ejournal articles from selected university and scholarly repositories.

Guides to Microforms (Primary Sources in U.S. History) -- Guides to microform sets in American history, foreign relations, women's studies.

Health and psychosocial instruments -- information on measurement instruments (i.e., questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes/manuals, rating scales, projective techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests) in the health fields, psychosocial sciences, organizational behavior, and library and information science.

Health, United States -- annual report on trends in health statistics which consists of two main sections: a chartbook containing text and figures that illustrates major trends in the health of Americans.

JSTOR -- Full-text articles from more than 320 scholarly journals, from the first issue of each journal (including some started in the late nineteenth century) up to 3 to 5 years ago.

LexisNexis Academic -- Full-text coverage of general news, medical, legal, business, governmental and reference topics.  Coverage varies by source; generally begins in mid-1980s.

MEDLINE -- Indexes biomedical literature.

ProQuest -- Full-text articles and abstracts from newspapers and periodicals in many disciplines, including international affairs, law, psychology, public affairs, sociology, women's studies, from 1988 to the present. (Also includes Alt-PressWatch, Ethnic newsWatch, and GenderWatch.)

PsycARTICLES -- full text access, citations and abstracts to articles from journals published by APA, the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association and Hogrefe & Huber.

PubMed -- access to Medline citations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals.

ScienceDirect  -- contains abstracts, tables of contents, and full text of articles in the sciences, technology, medicine and social sciences.

Studies on women and gender abstracts online -- books and journal articles on education, employment, women in the family, medicine and health, gender role socialization, social policy, the social psychology of women, female culture, media treatment of women, biography, literary criticism and historical studies.

Web of science -- access to the Science citation index expanded from 1900 to the present , Social sciences citation index from 1956 to the present, and Arts & humanities citation index from 1975 to the present.

Wiley interscience -- full text access to journals, reference works, books, and databases published by Wiley.
 

 
USEFUL WEB PAGES

Barnard and Columbia Sites: Both the Barnard and Columbia Library home pages have lists of recommended Web pages on various topics.  These make a  good place to start with finding information on the World Wide Web.

The Librarians' Internet Index provides annotated and subject classified links to quality websites.
