CLIO: the Library Catalog

CLIO: (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for the Barnard and Columbia Libraries. CLIO can be searched by author, title, subject and keyword.  Help for searching CLIO is available on every CLIO screen: click on the Help button at the top. 

• You can enter CLIO from the Barnard Library home page or from the Columbia University Libraries Home Page
• Search tips are available on the bottom of the opening search screen
• The holdings of the Health Sciences Library as well as Union Theological Seminary are included in CLIO
• The Law Library's catalog is Pegasus,Teacher's College catalog is Educat and JTS' catalog is Aleph
• To search CLIO, Pegasus and Educat simultaneously, click on the "Search all CU catalogs" button, available on every CLIO screen
• Primary sources can also be found in CLIO. For example, select the subject search and type: churchill winston
  note the subheadings under churchill winston 1874-1965:

   the subheadings: diaries, interviews and sources indicate primary sources; also search person as author
   A list of titles can be sorted by "Date (oldest first)." This will display the items with the earliest publications listed first.

Sample Searches:
Title search: leave off the initial article (the, an, la, etc.)

Author search: put last name, then first name
author: churchill winston 1874-1965

Finding a book about a person or a subject: start with a Keyword Search using the most distinctive words associated with the topic. Then look for useful subject headings and do a Subject Search.

Keyword search: use  quotes for a phrase, and use ? for truncation (to find variant endings of a word)
keyword: jewish women divorce
keyword: haskala? and russia
keyword: portug? narratives (angola or africa)
keyword: fashion britain (19th or nineteenth)

• keyword searches search various parts of the library screen/record for those words

• use most distinctive words

• try multiple searches

• find subject headings from the results of your keyword searches

Note that although the Barnard Library is in Lehman Hall, CLIO location Lehman means the Social Sciences library at Columbia; Barnard books have the location Barnard.

ABIA South & Southeast Asian Art
A bibliographic database on South and Southeast Asian art and archaeology compiled by an international team of specialists. ABIA index supplies annotated and indexed entries on scholarly publications in Asian and European languages relating to prehistory, (proto) historical archaeology, art history (including modern art), material culture, epigraphy, palaeography, numismatics and sigillography.

Africa-wide: NiPAD
Index to publications and unpublished manuscripts about and from Africa in history, literature, music ,arts, business and social sciences, 1981 to present.

AP Photo Archive
Associated Press photo archive of over 500,000 images from 1844 to the present.

Art Bibliographies Modern
Provides abstracts of journal articles, books, essays, exhibition catalogs, PhD dissertations, and exhibition reviews on all forms of modern and contemporary art dating from the late 19th century onwards, and including photography since its invention.

Art Full Text & Art Retrospective
Indexes, abstracts and full-text from international periodicals, yearbooks, and museum bulletins. Areas covered include archaeology, architecture, art, film, humanities, marketing, motion pictures and photography.

Bibliography of Asian Studies
Major database for locating materials about Asian countries.

British Humanities Index
indexes articles, excluding reviews, in more than 320 humanities journals, magazines, and newspapers published in the UK, 1962 to present.

Catholic Periodical and Literature Index
Includes indexed citations to articles published in Roman Catholic periodicals, Papal documents, church promulgations, and books about the Catholic faith that are authored by Catholics and/or produced by Catholic publishers.

Central and Eastern European Online Library
an online archive which provides access to full text articles pertaining to Central, Eastern and South-Eastern European topics.

Family and Society Studies World Wide
Indexes, with some full text, scholarly works on marriage and the family.

JSTOR: the Scholarly Archive 
JSTOR means journal storage and is a large group of more than 600 journals in many disciplines including history. It has the full text of the journal beginning from volume 1 up to the last 3-5 years. It is searchable as a whole or by journal title or subject area. History journals include Journal of Modern History, Renaissance Quarterly, Journal of the History of Ideas and more. Political Science, Sociology and other subject areas are included.
Useful for finding both primary or secondary articles.

LION: Literature Online
English and American poetry, drama, prose, biographies, and secondary sources, from the Anglo-Saxon period to the 20th century.
Search Tips: To find critical articles click on "Search criticism and reference."

MLA Bibliography
Major database for literature, language, linguistics and folklore. Citations for articles, dissertations, books, book chapters, etc. from 1963 to the present.

PAIS International (Public Affairs Information Service database)
Citations and abstracts for articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, book chapters, and statistical directories about public affairs, 1972 to present.

Philosopher's Index
citations and abstracts of books and journal articles in philosophy and related fields.

Project Muse
Searchable E-journal collection of full text of articles from periodicals, includes current issues only. Interdisciplinary, includes Journal of Social History, Journal of World History and many other journals. Primarily humanities and social science journals.

Royal Historical Society Bibliography
Database containing 350,000 records on British and Irish history.

Social Sciences Citation Index
Citations, abstracts and full-text articles in the social sciences.

Sociological Abstracts
Abstracts and indexes the international literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. The database provides citations from 1963 to the present to journal articles, book reviews, books, book chapters, dissertations, and conference proceedings.

Studies on Women and Gender Abstracts

Full text access to Readex's three series of Early American Newspapers, covering 1690-1922.

Center for Research Libraries Catalog
The Center for Research Libraries or CRL has a collection of newspapers as well as books.

Foreign Press Translations
Includes FBIS Reports, World News Connection which include translations from non-U.S. news sources.

Lexis Nexis Academic 
Major newspaper database. Coverage is mid-nineteen eighties to present. Interdisciplinary database of over 1,800 sources including full text articles from newspapers, including international newspapers, wire services and other sources.

CATNYP: the Research Libraries On-line Catalog

Interlibrary Loan will borrow books or obtain photocopies of items that are not available at the Barnard or Columbia Libraries with no charge to the patron. Click on Request It to borrow items through Interlibrary Loan. Information about "Borrow Direct" is also available on this page.

Union Catalogs can identify and locate materials not available in the CU Library system. Eureka  and WorldCat are two union catalogs available on the main listing of databases.
