Searching CLIO
 
CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for materials added to the Columbia University Libraries since 1981.  
  • For keyword searches, AND is automatically inserted between term. You may also use OR or NOT between the terms, or quotes for a phrase.
  • For a title search, leave off the initial article (the, an, le, etc.)
  • For an author search, put last name, then first name
  • You can retrieve materials in English only using the Pre-set Limits or Post Limits options

To find PRIMARY SOURCES, use these terms in your search: ARCHIVES, BIOGRAPHY (this includes autobiographies), CORRESPONDENCE, DIARIES, INTERVIEWS, SOURCES. Enter them as "any of these" in a Guided Keyword search, selecting Subject from the In: menu.

  • Using these resources to find journal articles is sometimes a two-step process; first, find citations in the index, and second, click on to find the full text online or do a Journal Title search in CLIO to find out how to locate the full text online or a print copy.   

America: History & Life -- Citations for publications related to U.S. and Canadian history.

Arts & humanities citation index -- Multidisciplinary database covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities.

Black studies center -- combines three invaluable resources for research and teaching in Black Studies: Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, International Index of Black Periodicals (IIBP), and The Chicago Defender.

CIAO : Columbia international affairs online -- publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 onward that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs.

CINAHL -- provides authoritative coverage of the literature related to nursing and allied health.

Contemporary Women's Issues -- Full-text articles and reports about women from U.S. and international sources.

Genderstats : a database of gender statistics -- Compiles data on key gender topics from a variety of national and international sources.

Google scholar -- Retrieves references to books, abstracts, and ejournal articles from selected university and scholarly repositories.

Guides to Microforms (Primary Sources in U.S. History) -- Guides to microform sets in American history, foreign relations, women's studies.

Historical abstracts -- Provides bibliographical coverage of the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada).

Humanities & social sciences index retrospective, 1907-1984 -- Search journals in the humanities and social sciences back to 1907.

Humanities Full Text -- Citations, abstracts, and full text for articles in humanities periodicals.

International Bibliography of the Social Sciences -- Citations for articles from over 100 countries in more than 90 languages, in the disciplines of anthropology, economics, political science and sociology, from 1951 to the present.

JSTOR -- Full-text articles from more than 320 scholarly journals, from the first issue of each journal (including some started in the late nineteenth century) up to 3 to 5 years ago.

Left index -- Citations, abstracts and some full-text to the literature politically on the left.

LexisNexis Academic -- Full-text coverage of general news, medical, legal, business, governmental and reference topics.  Coverage varies by source; generally begins in mid-1980s.

Literature online -- Large searchable collection of English-language literature, plus some literary reference tools.

MLA bibliography -- Citations for articles in literature, linguistics, language, and folklore periodicals and other publications.

The Nation Digital Archive -- Searchable full text and page images of a major U.S. journal of left/liberal opinion, 1865-1999.

PAIS international -- Indexes articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, book chapters, and statistical directories in the area of public affairs.

Project Muse -- Full-text articles from more than 100 scholarly journals in history and the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences

ProQuest -- Full-text articles and abstracts from newspapers and periodicals in many disciplines, including international affairs, law, psychology, public affairs, sociology, women's studies, from 1988 to the present. (Also includes Alt-PressWatch, Ethnic newsWatch, and GenderWatch.)

ProQuest historical newspapers -- Full-text and full-image articles from major American newspapers, every page from every issue in PDF files.

Readers' guide full text -- Abstracts of articles from popular periodicals published in the U.S. and Canada. Includes current events and news, fine art, fashion, education, business, sports, health and nutrition, consumer affairs, and more.

Readers' guide retrospective -- Covers the popular general-interest periodicals published in the U.S., reflecting the history of 20th century America.

Social Sciences Full Text -- Abstracts for journal articles on anthropology, business, community health, economics, foreign affairs, geography, international relations, law and criminology, medical care, political science, politics, psychiatry, psychology, public welfare, social work, and sociology, 1983 to the present.

Social services abstracts -- Citations and abstracts for research in social work, human services, and related areas, including social welfare and social policy.

USEFUL WEB PAGES

Barnard and Columbia Sites: Both the Barnard and Columbia Library home pages have lists of recommended Web pages on various topics.  These make a  good place to start with finding information on the World Wide Web.

The Librarians' Internet Index provides annotated and subject classified links to quality websites.
