Using CLIO
| To search for books about Shakespeare (biographies, criticism, information about adaptations of his plays into films, etc.), use: | |
| s=Shakespeare,
William (telnet version) In CLIO on the Web use Basic Searching and click Subject. You can also search for books about specific works or characters with a subject search in CLIO. s=Othello
(telnet version) s=Lear
King Legendary Character (telnet version) |
|
To find published bibliographies that will cite articles and books about Shakespeare try a keyword search in CLIO, specifying that the terms shakespeare and bibliography are in the Library of Congress Subject Headings.
Example:
k=shakespeare.su.
bibliography.su. (telnet version)
In telnet CLIO you must place .su. [dot su dot] directly after each word
to force CLIO to retrieve only those items with those terms in the subject headings.
In CLIO
on the Web use Advanced Searching and choose Subject from the
pull-down menu.
Shakespearean criticism
BARNARD REFERENCE PR2965 .S43
This set reprints excerpts of criticism from the 16th century to current
day. The set is an easy way to compile citations to articles and reviews; it also provides
an overview of how scholarship has changed over time concerning Shakespeare. A wonderful
starting place if you know what play you are working on, but haven't decided what specific
aspect you want to investigate. The index in the last volume points you to the volumes
containing information about your play/topic.

materials, since the MLA is international in coverage. The MLA indexes essays in books,
periodical literature, and dissertations. Some material indexed by the MLA may not be at
Columbia; consider checking NYPL or NYU's collections, or trying BorrowDirect or
InterLibrary Loan.
