The Age of Gold.  Program 3 of the 1991 TV documentary series The Buried Mirror
The New World brought Spain enormous treasures: gold, silver, chocolate, tomatoes, the potato. Yet Spain's most powerful ruler, Philip II, lived in austere solitude in a cell-like study. He sought to protect the Catholic faith, while Cervantes questioned all values in Don Quixote, Velazquez painted masterpieces of psychological penetration, and the Baroque style vaulted the Atlantic and celebrated its transformation into a tool for Indian fantasy in the magnificant churches of Potosi and Ocotlan.

Grandeur and Obedience; The Light of Experience.  Programs 7 and 8 of the 1969 TV series Civilisation by Kenneth Clark.
In "Grandeur and Obedience", Clark visits the Rome of the Counter-Reformation, the Rome of Michelangelo and Bernini. The Catholic Church in its struggle against the Protestant north developed a new splendor symbolized by the glory of the Vatican.  In "The Light of Experience", the telescope and microscope reveal new worlds in space and in a drop of water. The realism found in Dutch painting took the observation of human character to a new stage of development.

The Pursuit of Happiness; The Smile of Reason  Programs 9 and 10 of the 1969 TV series Civilisation by Kenneth Clark.
In "The Pursuit of Happiness", the harmonius flow and complex symmetry of 18th century music--the compositions of Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart--are reflected in the Rococo architecture of that period, as seen in the churches and palaces of Bavaria.   In "The Smile of Reason", the polite chat in the elegant salons of 18th century Paris became the precursor of revolutionary politics. Lord Clark's theme takes him from great European palaces to Jefferson's Monticello in Virginia.
BARNARD MEDIA CB68 .C54 1993g

The Worship of Nature; The Fallacies of Hope.  Programs 11 and 12 of the 1969 TV series Civilisation by Kenneth Clark.
In "The Worship of Nature", the belief in the divinity of nature usurps Christianity as the chief creative force in Western civilization, ushering in the Romantic movement.  In "The Fallacies of Hope", the French Revolution led to the dictatorship of Napoleon and the dreary bureaucracies of the 19th century. The disillusionment of Romantic artists is traced through the music of Beethoven, the poetry of Byron, the art of Delacroix, and the sculpture of Rodin.

USING CLIO TO FIND BOOKS AND JOURNALS
You can enter CLIO from the Barnard Library home page or from the Columbia University LibraryWeb.
CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for materials added to the Columbia University Libraries since 1981; for older materials, use the card catalogs.

USING INDEXES TO FIND CITATIONS TO PERIODICAL ARTICLES

On the Databases list on the Barnard Library homepage, there are over 200 indexes, databases and catalogs which can enable you to find citations for journal articles and books, and also the full text of many articles.

  • Read the descriptions of the indexes to find out which ones might be the most useful for your research.
  • Search by keyword or subject to find some germane citations
  • In CLIO, look up the titles of the journals in which the articles appear (in the title index screen, the title of a journal is followed by "serial")
  • If you are using the Telnet version of CLIO, use the hol command to examine the libraries holdings and find out where the volume you want is located.

The indexes and databases listed below will probably be the most relevant to your research.

Humanities Abstracts

  • Citations and abstracts for articles, book reviews, etc. in archaeology, art, classics, film, folklore, journalism, linguistics, music, performing arts, philosophy, religion and world history and literature, published from 1984 to the present
  • Start with a simple keyword search to find some good subject headings - here called "descriptors"
  • If it says at the top of the record, "FirstSearch indicates your institution owns the item" you can’t trust this, and still have to check CLIO
  • To e-mail results to yourself: click on the "E-mail" button at the top

MLA Bibliography

  • Citations for articles, dissertations, books etc. on literature, linguistics, language, and folklore, published from 1963 to the present
  • Dissertations may be harder to find than articles in journals, so probably best to limit search to articles

JSTOR

  • A full text database of articles from over 60 scholarly journals, from each journal’s first issue up to 3 to 5 years ago
  • There are no abstracts for most articles, and no subject headings at all, so searching in the title is the most direct search. A full text search will often find too many irrelevant articles
  • You can print articles - use Adobe Acrobat Economy Print, rather than JPrint
  • You cannot e-mail results

ProQuest Direct
  • Full text database of articles from newspapers and scholarly journals
  • Select scholarly journals by clicking on PA Research II Periodicals and PA Research II--Peer Reviewed, then click on Continue at the top

Women's Resources International
  • Citations for articles on women's studies, gender studies, feminist theory and criticism, published from 1972 to the present
  • If you use a Biblioline Professional advanced search, you can specify a geographic area, time period, etc.
