Shakespeare Although dated (published in 1978) this is still a very useful and unique bibliography. Arranged by topic, it provides citations to social/historical/philosophical works, textual criticism, and criticisms of specific plays. Best of all, for each play it often has a section devoted to works about specific characters, or particular scenes, or language and imagery. |

Shakespearean criticism This set reprints excerpts of criticism from the 16th century to current day. The set is an easy way to compile citations to articles and reviews; it also provides an overview of how scholarship has changed over time concerning Shakespeare. A wonderful starting place if you know what play you are working on, but haven't decided what specific aspect you want to investigate. The index in the last volume points you to the volumes containing information about your play/topic. |
