Reference Books

Encyclopedias, dictionaries and other reference books can provide useful background and factual information. They can also provide bibliographies that lead you to relevant books and articles.  The reference books in this list are available in the Barnard Library reference area on the second floor.  There are many other reference books which may be helpful to you.  Please ask the reference librarian for help in identifying additional reference books.

CLIO: the online catalog & other library catalogs

CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for the Barnard & Columbia Libraries. CLIO can be searched by author, title, subject and keyword.  Help for searching CLIO is available on the Web CLIO opening screen.  Click on: "Connect via WWW".

Other Library Catalogs:

Please note that Teachers’ College, Union Theological Seminary and the Law Library’s holdings are not listed in CLIO and that they have their own online library catalogs. The holdings of the Health Sciences Library are listed in CLIO. CATNYP is the online catalog of the NYPL research library and has an extensive newspaper collection.  Also WorldCat is a composite catalog of the collections of about 24,000 libraries. Eureka is a composite catalog of the collections of major research, academic, museum and other libraries. Click on "Other Library Catalogs" to locate and search these catalogs. Items listed in these catalogs which are not located at Columbia may be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan. See below.

Interlibrary Loan:

Interlibrary Loan will borrow books or obtain photocopies of items that are not available at the Barnard or Columbia Libraries with no charge to the patron. To order an item on Interlibrary Loan click on "Request It" on the BC Library home page or CULWeb. Then click on "Interlibrary Loan" and you may request it electronically (or click here). You may also make a request in person at the Interlibrary Loan office in 307 Butler.

 

Databases & Indexes: for locating articles & secondary sources

To find journal and periodical articles click on Databases (Journal articles and more). You can access this from the Barnard Library home page as well as from Columbia University LWeb. There are links for many indexes which give citations, abstracts and some full text for articles in various disciplines. After using an index you need to search CLIO to locate the journal in the Barnard/Columbia Library system. Some databases may have an e-link which will search to see if the full-text of a particular item is available online. 

The following indexes and databases will probably be the most relevant to your research:

America: History and Life
Major periodical index to scholarly journals on all aspects of American history. 1982 to present. e-link enabled.

Humanities Abstracts
1984 to present. General humanities. Includes history as well as archaeology, art classics, film, folklore, journalism, linguistics, music, performing arts and religion. e-link enabled.

Social Sciences Abstracts
1983 to present. General social sciences. Includes anthropology, sociology and social history. e-link enabled.

PCI: Periodicals Contents Index 
Especially useful for finding articles published in the 18, 19th and the early 20th century. Interdisciplinary and includes international journals. Primarily humanities and social sciences. Citations only. e-link enabled.

ProQuest Direct
Full-text articles and abstracts from newspapers and periodicals in many disciplines, including international affairs, law, psychology, public affairs, sociology, women's studies, from 1988 to the present.  For scholarly journals, select "Interdisciplinary-Research Library" from the drop-down menu.

Readers' Guide Abstracts
Citations to articles in popular and general interest periodicals. 1983 to present. e-link enabled.

Readers' Guide Retrospective
Citations to articles in popular and general interest periodicals from 1890-1982.

American Memory
From the Library of Congress, with over 80 collections full text online (texts, music, photographs, films).
Topics from this collection include: Pearl Harbor, the Haymarket Affair and San Francisco and the 1906 earthquake.

JSTOR
Full-text articles from more than 320 scholarly journals, some of which go back to the 1890s. History, Sociology and African American Studies are among the disciplines included.

 

Newspapers

American Newspapers in the Columbia University Libraries
Full-text and full image articles from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal back to their first issue.

LEXIS NEXIS
Full-text coverage of general news, medical, legal, business, governmental and reference topics.  Coverage varies by source; generally begins in mid-1980s. Major database for finding newspapers.

ProQuest Historical Newspapers
Full-text and full image articles from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal back to their first issue.

Gale Database of Publications and Broadcast Media
Contains descriptive and directory information for more than 64,000 newspapers, periodicals, newsletters, television, and radio stations.
This can help you in identifying newspapers.

Internet News Links (E-News): from the Journalism Library
Includes links to national, international, wire services and more.

Subject Guides and Internet Resources: from the Journalism Library
Includes magazine, media studies, Internet news sources, news compilations and more.
