CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for the Barnard & Columbia Libraries. CLIO can be searched by author, title, subject and keyword.  Help for searching CLIO is available on the Web CLIO opening screen.  Click on: "Connect via WWW".

Finding a book about a person or a subject: start with a Keyword search using the most distinctive words associated with the topic. Then look for useful subject headings and do a Subject search.

Limiting to books in Barnard Library or by language: use the More Limits or Post Limits option

Databases & Indexes: for locating periodical &journal articles

On the A-Z list of all databases, which you can access from the Barnard Library home page or Columbia LibraryWeb, there are links to many indexes which give citations, abstracts and some full-text for articles in various disciplines. Many databases have e-links which will search to see if the full-text of a particular item is available online through CULibrary Web. If you are unable to locate an item full-text search CLIO directly for the journal title.

Lexis-Nexis Academic
Full-text reviews of the performing arts are available in the Guided News Search under "Arts & Sports News" - select "Entertainment News" or "Book, Movie and Play Reviews". You may also search the newspapers for reviews by choosing  "General News". The New York Times, from 1980 to present, as well as many other newspapers are included.

ProQuest
Online journal articles and citations, interdisciplinary, Select scholarly materials by clicking on "Databases selected" then select "Research Library", or select "ProQuest Newspapers" for newspaper articles, includes New York Times

ProQuest Historical Newspapers
Select historical newspapers by clicking on "Databases selected", then select the appropriate newspapers. Includes the full text of the New York Times from 1857-2001, the LA Times from 1881-1961, the Chicago Tribune from 1890 to 1969 and the Washington Post from 1877-1988.

JSTOR, the Scholarly Journal Archive
An archive of full text articles from more than 350 scholarly journals in the performing arts, literature, classics, history, and more, from each journal's first issue but excluding the most current, usually 3-5 years. Includes Dance Research, TDR and many more titles.

Major database for finding literature, language and folklore articles, essays, books and book chapters, 1963 to present.
