- Using these resources to find journal articles is sometimes a two-step process; first, find citations in the index, and second, click on "e-link" to find the full text online or do a Journal Title search in CLIO to find out how to locate the full text online or a print copy.
These indexes and databases will be good places to start your research. Databases in bold print especially recommended:
AccessUN -- citations to UN publications, with some full-text links.
Bibliography of Asian studies -- contains more than 545,000 records on all subjects (especially humanities and social sciences) pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia published 1971 to the present.
Business source premier -- full-text articles on business, marketing, management, accounting, finance, international business, econometrics and economics. Contains full text of the Harvard Business Review, California Management Review and other important journals and databases.
Cambridge Journals Online -- full-text journals published by Cambridge University Press.
China academic journals -- full-text journal articles.
CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online -- working papers, conference proceedings, journals, books, a schedule of events, and links and resources.
Digital Dissertations -- citations and abstracts for dissertations and theses covering all academic subjects.
Ethnic newsWatch -- Full text articles from newspapers and periodicals published by the ethnic and minority press in America. Coverage is 1991 to date.
Historical abstracts -- citations and abstracts for publications related to world history, excluding the U.S. and Canada, from 1450 to the present.
Humanities Full Text -- citations, abstracts, and full text for articles in humanities periodicals.
International Bibliography of the Social Sciences -- citations for publications related to the social sciences.
International Political Science Abstracts -- citations and abstracts for political science articles in journals and yearbooks published worldwide.
JSTOR -- full-text articles from more than 322 scholarly journals.
Left index -- citations, abstracts and some full-text to the literature politically on the left.
LexisNexis Academic -- full-text coverage of general news, business, legal, governmental and other topics.
The Nation digital archive -- searchable full text and page images of a major U.S. journal of left/liberal opinion, 1865-1999.
PAIS international -- citations and abstracts for publications related to public affairs.
Project Muse -- full-text articles from more than 100 scholarly journals in history and the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences
ProQuest Direct -- full-text, citations, and abstracts from periodicals in many disciplines plus major U.S. newspapers.
Readers' Guide Abstracts -- citations, abstracts, and fulltext for articles in popular and general-interest periodicals, 1983 to the present.
Social Sciences Abstracts -- citations, abstracts, full text for articles in social sciences periodicals.
Tōyōgaku bunken ruimoku kensaku -- coverage of post-1981 Japanese imprint journal articles and books on South, Southeast, Central,and East Asia.
Women's studies international -- citations for materials related to women's studies, gender studies, feminist theory and criticism
Worldwide Political Science Abstracts -- citations and abstracts articles in political science journals.
Zhongguo ren min da xue fu yin bao kan zi liao -- covers a variety of subjects in social sciences and humanities related to Chinese studies.
Many scholarly journals are available on the Web. The journal often is included in a searchable collection of journals supplied as a package by the publisher or by another vendor. These collections are included on the list of Databases linked from the Barnard Library home page. If you have a particular journal that you want to access electronically:
- Enter the title in CLIO, omitting the initial article (a, an, the, la, le, un, etc.)
- In the Quick Limits box below the Search For field
- Select Electronic Journals/Magazines/Serials
- Click search
- If we have an online subscription or database access, one or more links will be provided in the record

- Columbia: Electronic Data Service -- operated jointly by the Columbia University Libraries and Academic Information Systems (AcIS) to support instruction and research that involve numeric and geo-spatial data resources.
- Digital National Security Archive -- collections of declassified documents in areas of U.S. foreign policy and intelligence.
EIU country data -- analytical database of worldwide economic indicators and forecasts, providing more than 317 series on 150 countries and 45 regional aggregates, running from 1980 and forward to 2005.
Global market information database -- demographic, economic and marketing statistics for 205 countries worldwide.
- iPoll -- poll/survey questions and responses.
- Monthly Bulletin of Statistics (UN) -- statistics from the United Nations.
- Oral History Online -- index to oral history collections in English from around the world.

Searching CLIO
CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for materials added to the Columbia University Libraries since 1981.
- For a title search, leave off the initial article (the, an, le, etc.)
- For an author search, put last name, then first name
- For a keyword search, you must use and, or or not between the terms, or quotes for a phrase
- Only use a uniform title search for anonymous works
- You can limit to books in the Barnard library using the More Limits or Post Limits options
Other Library Catalogs
Those with Columbia ID have access to the libraries of the Columbia Law School, the Jewish Theological Seminary, Teachers’ College, and Union Theological Seminary, but they are not included in CLIO. CUID also provides access to the libraries of New York University. Anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in New York is entitled to a New York Public Library card. Use the Catalogs list on CU LibraryWeb, or the following links:

This center is "devoted to teaching, research, training and formulating policy advice in transnational crime, corruption and terrorism." Much of the work "has focused on the analysis of transnational crime and corruption in the countries which constitute the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe." The site provides descriptions of research with links to documents and related information in areas such as trafficking in persons, money laundering, corruption, and transnational crime. IIP is an office of the U.S. Department of State which "conducts, develops, and distributes public diplomacy materials in support of U.S. foreign policy objectives." EndNote bibliographic software is available for downloading, free of charge, to all current Barnard and Columbia students from the AcIS software server at http://www.columbia.edu/acis/software/endnote.
EndNote allows you to
- search for citations in library catalogs and databases using the EndNote software, or export results into EndNote from remote catalogs and databases
- store the citations in libraries you create within EndNote
- search through the citations you have stored using keyword searches
- cite them in papers and bibliographies using any citation format you choose using the EndNote "Cite While You Write" feature
Consult the page EndNote at Barnard and Columbia for more details, the EndNote Manual (particularly Chapter 3) that is downloaded to your computer along with the program, and the online tipsheets that deal with specific topics.
