Finding Music & Books on Music

  • Use CLIO to find books, journals, links to online journals and, and non-print materials, in the Columbia or Barnard libraries. CLIO does not index journals. Use an online index or database to locate articles on a particular topic.
  • The Barnard Library has a large collection of sound recordings, including CDs, audiotapes, records, DVDs, as well as scores and librettos. Use CLIO to locate these items. The non-print music materials are located in Barnard Media Services on the 3rd floor of the Barnard Library. Scores and librettos are located on the 1st floor of the Barnard Library. Materials located at Barnard will have the location "Barnard" included in the CLIO record.
    The collection of the Columbia Music & Arts Library (701 Dodge Hall) is also listed in CLIO.
  • The call number range for books about  music is M-MT which is located on the 3rd floor of the Barnard Library.
  • Media Services has Academic Subject Lists for their visual materials. There is a subject list for Music as well as for Musicals and copies of these are available on the 3rd floor of the Barnard Library. You may also want to check the Media Services home page. Current indexing for over 300 scholarly and popular periodicals. Includes full text articles. 1977 to present.

Music Index
Provides indexing on a broad range of subjects, classical, popular, non-Western, music, from over 600 periodicals. Covers music topics as well as book reviews, record reviews and more. 1979 to present.

RILM: Repertoire International de Litterature Musicale
Provides citations and abstracts for scholarly articles, books, bibliographies, catalogues, dissertations, Festschriften, films and videos, iconographies, ethnographic recordings and more. 1979 to present.

RIPM: Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals
Provides access to eighteenth-, nineteenth- and twentieth-century periodical literature dealing with music.
