Finding a book about a person or a subject: start with a Keyword search using the most distinctive words associated with the topic. Then look for useful subject headings and do a Subject search.

: use and, or not between the terms, use quotes ("  ") for a phrase, and use ? for truncation (to find variant endings of a word)

DATABASES & INDEXES: for locating periodical &journal articles
On the Databases list, which you can access from the Barnard Library Home Page or Columbia University Libraries Home Page there are links to many indexes which give citations, abstracts and some full-text for articles in various disciplines. Many databases have e-links which will search to see if the full-text of a particular item is available online through Columbia's resources. If you are unable to locate an item full-text search CLIO directly for the journal title.

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
Abstracts of books and articles from professional journals and major news magazines, devoted to North American and International Politics, 1976 to present.

PAIS International (Public Affairs Information Service database)
Citations and abstracts for articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, book chapters, and statistical directories about public affairs, 1972 to present.

International Political Science Abstracts
Abstracts for articles in the field of political science, including public administration, political theory and international relations, published in journals and yearbooks worldwide, 1989 to present.

CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online
Working papers, conference proceedings, journals, books, a schedule of events, and links and resources.

Social Sciences Citation Index: ISI World of Knowledge
Multidisciplinary database with searchable author abstracts, covering the journal literature of the social sciences.

Social Sciences Full Text
Abstracts for journals in anthropology, business, community health, economics, foreign affairs, geography, international relations, law and criminology, sociology and social history, 1983 to present.

International Bibliography of the Social Sciences
Citations for articles from over 100 countries in more than 90 languages, in the disciplines of anthropology, economics, political science and sociology, from 1951 to present.

JSTOR, the Scholarly Journal Archive
An archive of full text articles from more than 350 scholarly journals in anthropology, African studies, education, history, philosophy, political science, population studies, sociology and others from each journal's first issue but excluding the most current, usually 3-5 years. Includes World Politics, Political Science Quarterly and many more titles.

Project Muse
Full text articles from more than 170 scholarly journals published by Johns Hopkins University Press in the humanities and social sciences. Included are Africa Today, Human Rights Quarterly and man more titles. Includes most recent years only.

ProQuest Direct
Full text articles and abstracts from newspapers and periodicals in many disciplines, international affairs, law, psychology, public affairs, sociology, women's studies, from 1988 to the present. For scholarly journals, click on "scholarly journals" after results are retrieved. The advanced search is recommended.

Chicano Database: CDB
Bibliographic materials on Mexican-American topics 1967 to the present. Scope expanded in 1992 to include the broader Latino experience, including Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Central American immigrants.

A news and education service on Latin America.

Lexis-Nexis Academic
Contains many foreign newspapers in full-text, but they are not grouped by country. Hence it is necessary to know the name of a newspaper in order to search for it.  Select the Guided News Search and the World News category, and then the appropriate region.  After that, it is possible to examine the Source List to see which newspapers are available, coverage generally begins in mid-1980s.

A comprehensive database of governmental institutions on the World Wide Web: parliaments, ministries, offices, law courts, embassies, city councils, public broadcasting corporations, central banks, multi-governmental institutions etc.  Includes also political parties.

International Constitutional Law  
Provides the constitutions of a huge number of countries.

Parline
For all countries where a national legislature exists, the database provides general information on each of the Parliament's chambers; description of the electoral system; results of the most recent elections; information on the presidency of each chamber; information on the mandate and status of members of Parliament.

Center for Human Rights Documentation and Research

Supports the community of teachers, researchers, and law and social justice advocates working in the multidisciplinary sphere of Human Rights. The Center develops global collections--primary and secondary resources as well as archival collections and internal records from human rights organizations. It is the official designated repository for the archives of Amnesty International USA, Committee of Concerned Scientists, and Human Rights Watch. (Discussions are also underway with other organizations including Human Rights First, Physicians for Human Rights, and the International Center for Transitional Justice.)

Columbia Health Sciences Library
The holdings of the Health Sciences Library are listed in CLIO.

Columbia University Law Library
The Law Library has a separate catalog, Pegasus.

Lehman Library
The Lehman Social Sciences Library holds a contemporary collection of more than 330,000 volumes and approximately 1,700 current periodical titles. It includes materials acquired by Columbia libraries since 1974 in political science, sociology, social and cultural anthropology, political geography, journalism, environmental science, as well as a rich collection of materials on post-World-War-II international relations.

CATNYP is the online catalog of the NYPL research library and LEO is the online catalog of the NYPL Branch Libraries.

"Request It" is the venue to borrow books through Interlibrary Loan, Borrow Direct and other services. Interlibrary Loan will borrow books or obtain photocopies of items that are not available at the Barnard or Columbia Libraries with no charge to the patron.
