This guide is intended as a starting point in your research; the databases and reference tools listed here are a selective list. Always remember that you can ask for assistance at the Barnard Reference Desk at any point in your research, and you can always request a consultation.

Searching CLIO
 
CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online) is the on-line catalog for over 90% of the materials (print, electronic, audio, video, etc.) in the Columbia University Libraries.  
  • For keyword searches, AND is automatically inserted between term. You may also use OR or NOT between the terms, or quotes for a phrase.
  • For an author search, put last name, then first name
  • You can retrieve materials in English only using the Pre-set Limits or Post Limits options

To find PRIMARY SOURCES, use these terms in your search: ARCHIVES, BIOGRAPHY (this includes autobiographies), CORRESPONDENCE, DIARIES, INTERVIEWS, SOURCES. Enter them as "any of these" in a Guided Keyword search, selecting Subject from the In: menu.

Databases/Indexes

  • Academic Search Premier -- provides full text for nearly 4,700 publications, including full text for more than 3,600 peer-reviewed journals.

  • America: History & Life -- citations for publications related to U.S. and Canadian history.

  • American religion data archive : ARDA -- provides data on religious groups and affiliations in the United States.

  • Anthropological Literature -- citations for articles and essays in anthropology and archaeology periodicals and edited works.

  • ATLA Religion Database + ATLAS -- citations, abstracts, and some full-text articles from religion journals and essay collections.

  • Bibliography of Asian studies -- contains more than 545,000 records on all subjects (especially humanities and social sciences) pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia published 1971 to the present.

  • Contemporary women's issues -- A 98% full-text resource for information about women in over 190 countries.

  • Family & society studies worldwide -- Provides citations and some abstracts in social work, social science and family practice.

  • Gender studies database -- Combines NISC's Women's Studies International and Men's Studies databases with the coverage of sexual diversity issues.

  • HAPI online -- Citations to articles and book reviews in scholarly journals published in Latin America and the Caribbean, or those dealing with topics relating to Latin America, the Caribbean and Hispanic Americans.

  • Historical abstracts --  citations and abstracts for publications related to world history, excluding the U.S. and Canada, from 1450 to the present

  • Humanities full text -- brings full text (starting 1995) plus abstracts and bibliographic indexes (starting 1984) of noted scholarly sources in the humanities, as well as lesser known specialized magazines.

  • The index of articles on Jewish studies : Reshimat ma'amarim be-mada'e ha-Yahadut -- bibliography of scholarly articles in the various fields of Jewish studies and in the study of Eretz Israel.

  • Index to Jewish periodicals -- English-language articles, book reviews, and feature stories in more than 160 journals devoted to Jewish affairs.

  • International Bibliography of the Social Sciences -- citations for publications related to the social sciences.

  • International political science abstracts -- indexes and abstracts articles in the field of political science (including the sub-fields of public administration, political theory and international relations) published in journals (and yearbooks) all over the world.

  • JSTOR -- full-text articles from more than 322 scholarly journals.

  • LexisNexis Academic -- full-text coverage of general news, business, legal, governmental and other topics.

  • Old Testament abstracts -- Includes indexing and abstracts for journal articles, monographs, multi-author works, and software related to Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) studies.

  • Project Muse -- full-text articles from more than 100 scholarly journals in history and the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences

  • ProQuest -- full-text, citations, and abstracts from periodicals in many disciplines plus major U.S. newspapers.

  • Religious and theological abstracts -- Provides objective summaries of articles appearing in scholarly journals in the fields of Religion and Theology.

  • Social Sciences Full Text -- citations, abstracts, full text for articles in social sciences periodicals.

  • Sociological Abstracts -- citations and abstracts for articles in sociology periodicals.

  • Worldwide political science abstracts -- citations and abstracts of journal articles appearing political science journals, 1975 to the present.
