Students may drop off outgoing letter mail at the Mail Services window in Altschul, where there are slots for different kinds of mail. Local mail to Barnard, Columbia, and Teachers College does not require any postage. Other U.S. and international letter mail with the proper postage affixed will be turned over to the U.S. Postal Service when the carrier picks up Barnard’s outgoing mail in the afternoon, Monday–Friday only.
Students may purchase First Class “Forever Stamps” at The Barnard Store. Forever Stamps are always sold at the same price as a regular First Class Mail stamp and can be used to mail a one-ounce letter regardless of when the stamps were purchased and no matter how prices may change in the future. Students may also purchase stamps at local post offices on 112th and 125th streets or online from The Postal Store.
Once we have signed for a package, Mail Services cannot simply send it back. You must sign for the package, contact the vendor, and arrange for return shipping. That is the only way to track chain of custody back to the vendor. If you refuse to sign for the package, Mail Services cannot be held responsible when we “return to sender,” if the vendor does not acknowledge receipt of the returned item or issue you a credit. Mail Services will accept items with prepaid return labels from any standard carrier.
Barnard uses FedEx as our preferred shipper for Express and Ground shipping. Students may send FedEx items at the Altschul service window, paying by credit or debit card. Students are charged our discounted rate plus a service fee of up to $3.00.
We provide a range of FedEx Express envelopes and boxes, but these cannot be used for ground shipping. Unfortunately, we are unable to stock other shipping supplies and therefore encourage everyone to recycle used boxes and filler material for their own outgoing shipments.
