MINS maintains a number of servers (Unix, Linux, Windows, and Novell), each with specific functions to perform.
-
- Web Servers
- The Web Servers house the Barnard Home Page and the College's departmental homepages.
-
- E-mail Servers
- There are two E-mail Servers, BC and Eclipse. BC provides e-mail services to the administrators, faculty, and staff. Eclipse is used by students for e-mail and personal webpages.
-
- Novell Servers
- File Servers are primarily used by College administrators, faculty, and staff. They serve as a medium for storing and transferring files.
-
- List Server
- The list server is an automated mailing server that allows users to add or remove their name from mailing lists and mass distribute messages. This server is primarily used by administrators to inform the Barnard community of important news and events.
-
- Application Servers
- Application servers house the administrative applications used by the College such as Colleague, Benefactor, Financial Aid, and Health Services.
-
- DHCP Server
- DHCP is an industry-standard protocol for automatic assignment of IP configuration to workstations. It uses a client/server model for address allocation. The Network Administrator establishes one or more DHCP servers that maintain the network's TCP/IP configuration, including client configuration. Intranet workstations request leases on TCP/IP configuration from the DHCP server, thus eliminating the need for administrators to ma nually configure each workstation.
Barnard's DHCP server is used to assign IP addresses to lab computers and students' computers. Our staff is currently working on a new service which will allow students to register their computers with the DHCP server on the Barnard website in the future. For more info see DHCP in the glossary
Desktop Workstations
Barnard administrative computers are primarily Dell desktop systems. Academic Technologies is responsible for maintaining these systems. For more information on Barnard's Tech support for desktops, please visit the AT page.
