HOW TO ARRANGE FOR DEBT REPAYMENT BY THE MELLON FOUNDATION-SUMMARY
• Complete your section of the Mellon Foundation Graduate Study Verification Form.
• Submit this form to your Director of Graduate Studies in your Department, from the Dean of your Division, or from the Registrar’s Office at the end of the academic year (this is to verify your enrollment during that academic year).
• When the form is received in the Office of the Sophomore Dean at Barnard College, arrangements will be made to repay a portion of your undergraduate debt.
• Barnard will send you a confirmation each time a portion of your debt is paid.
• If you have any questions, please contact the Dean for the Sophomore Class, Vivian Taylor, at (212) 854-2024, or Professor Monica Miller at (212)854-2114.
• Remember that separate deferment forms must be filed directly with your lender for each year of enrollment.
• For each year of full-time graduate work, up to $1,250 of your undergraduate debt can be paid by the Mellon Foundation. This is possible for 4 years a maximum of $5,000.
• If you receive your Ph.D. degree within six years after beginning graduate work, an additional $5,000 of undergraduate debt can be repaid for you.
• Only your undergraduate (or graduate, if applicable) debt through the Perkins, Stafford or Barnard College loan programs is repayable. No parent loans or personally paid educational expenses can be reimbursed.
A reminder: Your Mellon Foundation support provides for the repayment of a portion of your undergraduate debt while you are enrolled full-time in a graduate program leading to a Ph.D. in acceptable fields of study. Graduate school loans (used for study) may also apply if you did not incur any undergraduate loans.
