Barnard Receives Record Number of Applications
Applications Rise 3 Percent
Barnard has received a record number of applications for admission—over 4,500—a rise of 3 percent over last year, and 13 percent in the last two years. The overall increase in applications this year includes the record number of early decision applicants (457), an increase of 11 percent.
Barnard recently sent acceptance letters to 175 young women who applied for early admission to next fall's entering Class of 2010. Admissions Dean Jennifer Fondiller said the admitted students are an exceptionally strong group, both academically and in terms of their personal qualities.
"Among the admitted students are professional actresses, writers, leaders in their schools and communities, scientists and students with distinguished commitments to service," Fondiller said. "Clearly, Barnard continues to be the school of choice for independent-minded, ambitious, and intelligent young women."
She said applications for regular decision, due January 1, are being counted and the numbers overall are robust.
On average, Barnard admits about 30 percent of an entering class from the early application pool. Last year, Barnard admitted 170 students of 412 who applied for early decision. Thirty-eight percent of those who applied were admitted early decision this year, compared to 41 percent last year.
In the last five years, early decision applications to Barnard have increased 60 percent.
Overall, the College has received about 4,000 applications for both early and regular decision.
