PROFESSOR ESTER FUCHS NAMED SPECIAL ADVISOR FOR GOVERNANCE AND STRATEGIC PLANNING FOR BLOOMBERG ADMINISTRATION

New York, NY, January 10, 2002 -- Ester Fuchs, Professor of Political Science at Barnard College and Columbia University and Director of the Columbia University Center for Urban Research and Policy, was appointed Special Advisor for Governance and Strategic Planning today by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

"Ester Fuchs has spent her entire career consulting with governments, teaching people about government, and has been at the forefront of public policy issues," Mayor Bloomberg said. "Ester will provide invaluable input on a number of issues impacting New York City - from health to homelessness to education - and she is a welcome addition to the Administration."

The Special Advisor for Governance and Strategic Planning works with the Chief of Staff, Senior Advisor, and Deputy Mayors on strategic planning and community building. Fuchs will assist with the development of reform initiatives for City agencies as well as advise on new, innovative ways to deliver public services.

Her combined experience as a professor of political science at Barnard specializing in American government and urban politics, as a scholar of urban mayors, and as a committed citizen of New York City makes her an exceptional resource for us all," said Elizabeth S. Boylan, Provost and Dean of the Faculty at Barnard College.

Fuchs, on leave from her academic positions, is a Professor of Political Science at Barnard College and Columbia University, Director of the Columbia University Center for Urban Research and Policy, and Chair of the Urban Studies Program and Public Affairs. Fuchs is the author of Mayors and Money: Fiscal Policy in New York and Chicago and has received grants to analyze public policy and political participation, including implementation of the National Voter Registration Act, evaluation of the federal homeless policy and political participation in New York City and New York State, and US Department of Housing and Urban Development evaluation of the federal homeless policy. Fuchs received a B.A. from Queens College, an M.A. from Brown University, and a Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Chicago.
