History Professor Mark Carnes Receives William Gilbert Award from the
American Historical Association
The American Historical Association has awarded the William Gilbert Award to Mark C. Carnes, Professor of History at Barnard. The Gilbert Award, for the best article on teaching history, was for Carnes's essay, "Inciting Speech," in Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning (March/April, 2005). The article, available by clicking here, describes the innovative course "Reacting to the Past" pioneered at Barnard.
“Reacting to the Past” consists of elaborate games, set in the past, in which students are assigned “roles” with “victory objectives” informed by classic texts in the history of ideas. Class sessions are run entirely by students; instructors advise and guide students and grade their oral and written work. Reacting classes, which typically consist of two or three “games” a semester. First offered at Barnard in 1995, the "Reacting" program has since spread to scores of colleges and universities throughout the nation.
“Reacting to the Past” has also won the 2004 Hesburgh Award Faculty Development to Enhance Undergraduate Teaching and Learning.
