GREGORY BROWN JOINS BARNARD COLLEGE AS VP FOR FINANCE
New York, NY - Gregory N. Brown, a financial manager with broad experience in government and major higher education institutions, joins the administration of Barnard College as Vice President for Finance, starting February 6. The appointment was announced by Barnard President Judith Shapiro, who cited Brown's outstanding experience in financial management, most recently as Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
Brown will serve as chief financial officer for Barnard, with responsibility for investments, budget, institutional research, and all financial operations. He will work with President Shapiro and the senior leadership to maximize the resources needed to realize the goals of Barnard's strategic plan. In doing so, he will focus on improving the College's financial reporting tools, enhancing the use of technology in financial administration of the College, and identifying revenue-generating and cost-saving opportunities.
President Shapiro said: "We feel very fortunate at Barnard to have a manager of Gregory Brown's impressive credentials join us at this time. Barnard has made major progress in all areas of institutional advancement -- in admissions, in the development of our campus, in fulfilling our strategic plan, and in fundraising. We look forward to having Gregory guide and advance our financial planning in his thoughtful, yet decisive way. I am confident he brings exactly the skills and experience we are looking for at this moment."
"I am impressed by Barnard's leadership role in advancing private undergraduate education" said Brown. "I look forward to working closely with President Shapiro, her President's Council, and the board committees that oversee the finances of the College. I am impressed by the administrative team and its approach to problem solving. I am thrilled to be part of this exceptional community and to serve as its chief financial officer."
Before he joined Hebrew Union, Brown served as Assistant Vice Chancellor and Controller for the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to that, he was the Controller for the City of New Haven, Conn. In these positions, Brown was instrumental in improving financial controls, implementing and enhancing financial information system capabilities, and in communicating financial information to a broad spectrum of audiences.
During the 1980s and early 1990s, Brown worked in a series of financial positions at Yale University, including positions at the School of Drama, Internal Audit, Budget, and Financial Reporting. At the time of his departure from Yale, he was the Assistant Controller for Financial Reporting.
A native of the New York area, he is a graduate of Wesleyan University, and holds a Master's in Public Administration from the University of New Haven.
Brown succeeds Lewis Wyman, who retired from Barnard after 26 years of service.
