Study
Abroad Dean Alperstein to Participate in Fulbright Seminar
in Germany
New York,
NY, February 6, 2003 - Janet Alperstein, Assistant Dean of
Studies and Dean for Study Abroad at Barnard College, has
been selected to participate in the 2003 Fulbright Seminar
for U.S. Administrators in International Education, to be
held in Germany, March 28 through April 17.
Participants in the International Education Administrators
Program will spend the first week in Berlin and will then
divide into five sub-groups of five administrators each to
visit different parts of Germany. The seminar will end with
the group reuniting for one week in Munich. The goal is to
give the participants a firsthand look into Germany's academic
infrastructure and culture and offer the participants new
perspectives on the need to internationalize U.S. campuses
and insight into how it can be done. For more information
on the programs itinerary, visit www.cies.org/IEA.
Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of
other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily
university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and
teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Grant recipients
are chosen for their leadership potential.
Alperstein has served as the Assistant Dean of Studies and
the Dean for Study Abroad at Barnard since 2000. During her
tenure, there has been a 20 percent increase in students studying
abroad. Barnard now sends approximately 30 percent of each
graduating class to study in one of over 100 countries. Alperstein
has extensively visited existing program sites and continually
identifies new study abroad opportunities. She has also hosted
several events that have brought current and prospective students
and alumnae together in many countries.
A 1992 cum laude Barnard graduate, she received her M.A. in
Student Personnel Administration from Teachers College in
1993 and was awarded a Ph.D. from Columbia University in Sociology
and Education in 2001.
Alperstein serves as her college alumnae class president,
on the Barnard College Alumnae Association Reunion Committee,
and on the Advisory Board for the Barnard College Center for
Research on Women. She is also a member of the Jewish Board
of Family and Childrens Services Domestic Violence Committee.
