Project" as Part of International Anti-War Effort, Mar.

New
York, NY As part of an international collaboration of
actors and citizens to protest the war plans over in Iraq,
Barnard College students and faculty will perform a staged
reading of Aristophanes ancient Greek anti-war comedy
Lysistrata on Monday, March 3. The readings will be
organized and directed by Professor Elizabeth Castelli Assistant
Professor Shawn-Marie Garrett and take place at noon and 1
p.m. in Lower Level McIntosh.
Performances of Lysistrata are scheduled in at least
42 countries and in all 50 U.S. states as part of "The
Lysistrata Project," in an effort to voice dissent against
war in Iraq conceived by New York actors Kathryn Blume and
Sharron Bower. The over 700 scheduled readings will raise
money for charities working for peace and humanitarian aid
in the Middle East.
Lysistrata is a comedy that tells the story of Athenian women
who unite to end a war by refusing to sleep with their men
until Athens makes peace with Sparta.
Dozens of teams of actors and directors in New York City will
read Lysistrata in public spaces throughout the day
on March 3 and an all-star reading of the play will be presented
at 7 p.m. at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Harvey Theater.
Mercedes Ruehl will read the title role, and will be joined
by F. Murray Abraham, Kevin Bacon, Kathleen Chalfont, Delphi
Harrington, Kyra Sedgwick, Lori Singer, and David Strathairn.
