Music Professor to Lead Voice Students Overseas in International Vocal Arts Workshop
New York, NY - Jane McMahan, mezzo-soprano and vocal professor at Barnard, has been invited to direct young, talented singers at the International Vocal Arts Workshop and Performance Program at the Jeunesses Musicales International Cultural Center, this June in Groznjan, Croatia.
The two-week program will be an in-depth exploration of vocal performance in which singers will develop and refine vocal, musical and interpretive skills. Workshop students explore unaccompanied song, studying the spare and transparent melodies of early music, and then move into more modern vocal works by classical, theater, and jazz composers such as Ravel, Bartok, Falla and Ellington.
Groznjan, a medieval village, which is located a half an hour from the Adriatic coast of Istria and a two-hour boat ride from Venice, has been a haven for artists and musicians and the home for the Jeunesses Musicales International Cultural Center for over 30 years. McMahan will direct the program, which will consist of morning, afternoon and evening classes, focusing on study body movement, mind and body imagery, vocalizing, group singing and interchange. Individual coaching and master classes will also be offered. One afternoon will be devoted to a symposium, East European Traditional Music and Theatre in Performance.
Participating students will bring in music from their own distinct cultures, in order to experience a wide range of styles, expand vocal capabilities, and generate an increased appreciation across cultures. Performances will be held to bridge both cultural and stylistic gaps among the international group of students according to McMahan.
"By the end of the workshop, we hope that students will develop a unique approach to vocal study," said McMahan. "At the end of the program, singers will be able to interact with their audience in a collectively produced street-theater performance, and will also sing in a more formal concert recital."
