An Evening of Poetry and Music by a Renowned French Poet and an Eminent Senegalese Griot, Apr. 11

New York, N.Y., -- Leading French poet Josee Lapeyrere and musician Djeour Cissokho will perform in Sulzberger Parlor (3rd Floor of Barnard Hall, 117th St. & Broadway), April 11, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Lapeyrere, a renowned poet, will read a selection of her work in both French and English. She has written five books and appeared in many poetry magazines in America, France, and South America, including Action poetique, El diario de poesia, and The Bitter Oleander Review. Additionally, her work has appeared in numerous anthologies in France and abroad including L'annee Poetique, Poesie en France, 29 Femmes -- Une Anthologie, and Barnard professor Serge Gavronsky's Five Contemporary French Women Poets.

A native of Senegal, Cissokho is the most eminent griot from the famous Cissokho family. He is renowned for his singing and playing of the kora, a long-necked harp lute of Western Africa consisting of 21 strings, a gourd resonator, and a leather-covered sound board. His music includes elements taken from jazz, reggae, and salsa. The founder of a musical group, Allalake, Cissokho has performed all over Africa and in France. He has numerous albums to his credit and will release a new CD this spring. Cissokho will sing traditional Senegalese songs and accompany himself on the kora during the evening program.

The event is organized and sponsored by the Barnard Department of French.
