College to Honor Martha Stewart of Martha Stewart
Living Omnimedia, Inc., and Charles R. Lee of
Verizon Communications, at March 29 Annual Awards
Dinner to Benefit College Financial Aid Programs
NEW
YORK, N.Y., March 21, 2001 - Barnard College will
honor Martha Stewart, Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc.
and Charles R. Lee, Chairman and co-Chief Executive
Officer of Verizon Communications, for their civic
and charitable contributions at the College's
fourteenth Annual Awards Dinner on Thursday, March
29.
Stewart,
a 1963 graduate of Barnard, will receive the Iphigene
Ochs Sulzberger Award, named for the alumna and
civic leader. This is the first time a Barnard
alumna has received the award. Stewart served
as a Barnard trustee from 1989 to 1993 and in
1998 received Barnard's Woman of Achievement Award.
Lee
will receive the Frederick A.P. Barnard Award,
named for the tenth president of Columbia University
and an early proponent of women's education. Lee
assumed his current post in June 2000 after the
merger of GTE Corporation and Bell Atlantic, and
previously served as chairman and chief executive
officer of GTE Corp.
"We
are delighted to honor these two corporate leaders
for the contributions they are making to our society
and to the City - one has strategically integrated
two telecommunications giants and the other has
demonstrated how domesticity and entrepreneurship
can be combined to extraordinarily powerful effect,"
said Barnard President Judith Shapiro. "The dinner
has already raised more than $1 million for scholarships,
and we are confident this year's dinner will break
the previous record."
The
black-tie event will be held at the Grand Ballroom
of The Waldorf-Astoria, with cocktails at 6:30
p.m., dinner at 7:30 p.m. and dancing to the Michael
Carney Orchestra. Master of ceremonies is Susan
Stamberg, author and National Public Radio special
correspondent, who is a 1959 Barnard graduate.
The Honorary chairman for the event is Eugene
R. McGrath, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer,
Consolidated Edison, Inc., and a trustee of Barnard.

Barnard
College, founded in 1889, is a highly selective,
independent liberal arts college for women affiliated
with Columbia University and located in New York
