Barnard College to Honor Martha Stewart of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc., and Charles R. Lee of Verizon Communications, at March 29 Annual Awards Dinner to Benefit College Financial Aid Programs

NEW YORK, N.Y., March 21, 2001 - Barnard College will honor Martha Stewart, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. and Charles R. Lee, Chairman and co-Chief Executive Officer of Verizon Communications, for their civic and charitable contributions at the College's fourteenth Annual Awards Dinner on Thursday, March 29.

Stewart, a 1963 graduate of Barnard, will receive the Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger Award, named for the alumna and civic leader. This is the first time a Barnard alumna has received the award. Stewart served as a Barnard trustee from 1989 to 1993 and in 1998 received Barnard's Woman of Achievement Award.

Lee will receive the Frederick A.P. Barnard Award, named for the tenth president of Columbia University and an early proponent of women's education. Lee assumed his current post in June 2000 after the merger of GTE Corporation and Bell Atlantic, and previously served as chairman and chief executive officer of GTE Corp.

"We are delighted to honor these two corporate leaders for the contributions they are making to our society and to the City - one has strategically integrated two telecommunications giants and the other has demonstrated how domesticity and entrepreneurship can be combined to extraordinarily powerful effect," said Barnard President Judith Shapiro. "The dinner has already raised more than $1 million for scholarships, and we are confident this year's dinner will break the previous record."

The black-tie event will be held at the Grand Ballroom of The Waldorf-Astoria, with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7:30 p.m. and dancing to the Michael Carney Orchestra. Master of ceremonies is Susan Stamberg, author and National Public Radio special correspondent, who is a 1959 Barnard graduate. The Honorary chairman for the event is Eugene R. McGrath, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Consolidated Edison, Inc., and a trustee of Barnard. For information about tickets, call the Barnard College Benefits Office at 212-362-2233. All proceeds will benefit the Barnard College financial aid program.

Dinner chairmen include: George David, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, United Technologies Corporation; Alan C. Greenberg, Chairman of the Board, Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc; Helene L. Kaplan, Of Counsel, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and a trustee chair emerita of Barnard; Stewart G.
