Lecture Series in Urban Education presents "Learning to Teach for Social Justice" with Professor Marilyn Cochran-Smith

Marilyn Cochran-Smith, Professor of Education at the Lynch School of Education at Boston College and President-elect of the American Educational Research Association, will speak as part of the Issues in Urban Education Lecture Series on Thursday, April 1.   The event, entitled "Learning to Teach for Social Justice," will take place from 4:30-6:00 P.M. in the James Room, 4 th floor of Barnard Hall at Barnard College.   A reception and book signing hosted by Teachers College Press will immediately follow.

Professor Cochran-Smith takes the premise that among the most important goals of teaching and teacher education are social responsibility, social change, and social justice.   In her talk, she will discuss six major principles of learning to teach for social justice, drawing on examples from the experiences of prospective and veteran teachers, primarily in urban schools.   The examples show what teaching for social justice looks like in the context of real schools and classrooms as well as how inquiry supports beginning teachers in pursuing these goals.

In addition to holding positions at Boston College and the American Educational Research Association, Dr. Cochran-Smith is also editor of the Journal of Teacher Education. She has written award-winning articles and books on issues of diversity in teaching and teacher education, as well as on teacher research, teacher learning, and the growth and development of knowledge for teaching. Her book, Walking the road: Race, diversity, social justice and teacher education, recently published by Teachers College Press, will be available for a book signing at the reception following her talk.

The Issues in Urban Education Lecture Series provides a lively forum for examining pressing issues facing urban schools and for identifying promising practices to creatively and successfully address these issues.   The series is sponsored through the collaborative efforts of Barnard College, Teachers College, and Columbia University including the Barnard College Education Program, Teachers College Department of Curriculum and Instruction: Elementary Pre-Service Education Program, and the Columbia University Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race.   Additional support is provided by Teachers College Press.
