Barnard College and New York University Host Two-Day Conference on French Novelist and Literary Critic Nathalie Sarraute
New York, NY-- The Department of French at Barnard College, in conjunction with the Center for French Civilization and Culture at New York University, will hold a two-day conference on the life and works of Nathalie Sarraute, titled Nathalie Sarraute: In her Century - La Traversée du Siècle , April 2 -3. The conference will feature a reading by Francine du Plessix Gray and will be moderated by Serge Gavronsky, Professor of French at Barnard, and Tom Bishop, Chair of the Center for French Civilization and Culture at New York University.
Nathalie Sarraute, born in 1900, was a French novelist and literary critic. Sarraute became one of the pioneers and leading theorists of the nouveau roman , the French post-World War II "new novel," or "antinovel" during the 1950's. With her work, Sarraute discarded conventional ideas about plot, chronology, characterization and the narrative point of view. She published her first book, Tropismes, in 1939 and went on to write sixteen more novels until her death in 1999.
The conference will feature readings and examinations of Sarraute's works and taped readings by Sarraute. The program on Friday will be held at NYU and on Saturday at Barnard. Highlights include:
