Barnard has sent acceptance letters to 1,163 applicants for the incoming class next fall, establishing the most selective admission season ever for the College. Barnard's admit rate of 26.5 percent was the lowest ever, while applications for both early and regular admissions set records. Additionally, the admitted students were the most selective group yet, based on a median combined SAT score of 1390. Overall, 4,380 students applied to Barnard as members of the Class of 2008, a 9% increase in applications overall. Early applications alone jumped 20 percent, with 405 applications. Barnard admitted 167 students from the early application pool.
The College expects to enroll 550 members of the first-year class in September, said Dean of Admissions Jennifer Fondiller.
The admitted students represent 44 states and 26 countries. About 41 percent are students of color (20 percent Asian; 10 percent Latina; 9 percent African-American and 2 percent Native American).
The admitted students include 58 young women whose mothers or grandmothers are Barnard alumnae and 25 whose sisters attend or graduated from the College.
The incoming class will include many accomplished and talented students; the admitted group includes a winner of a national engineering design challenge, a student who has completed research on Alzheimer's disease, a nationally ranked equestrian, an applicant who co-owns a summer camp with her brother, a student who drafted legislation as an intern with the New York City Council, a student who performed at the Grammy awards and another who is a columnist for Elle Girl magazine. Among the admitted class were students who speak six and seven languages each as well as many editors in chief of their school newspapers and presidents of their classes.
