TWO BARNARD STUDENTS EARN PRESTIGIOUS SCHOLARSHIPS
Barnard senior Mariam Banahi has been awarded a Fulbright grant and Barnard junior Rachel Leskowitz will receive a Goldwater Scholarship
Mariam Banahi '07 has been awarded a Fulbright grant for a year of study and research in Egypt. Mariam, who is majoring in Asian and Middle Eastern Cultures, will study the development of secular, nationalist consciousness in Egypt during Gamel Abdel Nasser's rise to power.
Upon her return from Egypt, Mariam plans to enter a joint program in which she can earn a master's degree in Middle Eastern studies and a law degree. Mariam hopes eventually to
return to Kabul, Afghanistan, the home her family.
Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries, through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.

Rachel Leskowitz '08, a Biological Sciences major, has been awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award for aspiring scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. It provides recipients with up to $7,500, toward tuition and fees, for up to two years of undergraduate study.
Rachel, who transferred to Barnard from Lehigh, comes from Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Barnard, she plans to pursue a doctorate in biology. Her interests include cancer research and developmental genetics.
Established by Congress in 1986 the Goldwater Foundation provides a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.
