to Honor Judy Lewent of Merck & Co., Inc., and David
H. Komansky of Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc., at May 14
Annual Awards Dinner to Benefit College Financial Aid Program

York, N.Y, April 22, 2002 Barnard College will honor
Judy C. Lewent, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial
Officer of Merck & Co., Inc., and David H. Komansky,
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Merrill Lynch &
Co., Inc., for their civic and charitable contributions
at the Colleges fifteenth Annual Awards Dinner, on
Tuesday, May 14, 2002.
Lewent will be the recipient of The Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger
Award, named for the alumna and civic leader. Komansky will
receive The Frederick A.P. Barnard Award, named for the
tenth president of Columbia University, and an early supporter
of womens education.

who have made significant contributions to corporate America,
the U.S. economy, and the world. Judy Lewents financial
acumen and innovative thinking have helped Merck become
not only a leading, global pharmaceutical company, but also
a recognized industry leader in providing access to medicines
throughout the world. David Komansky has successfully led
the global expansion of Merrill Lynch and developed an on-line
trading strategy for this investment conglomerate, making
it one of the most powerful financial companies in the world,"
said Judith Shapiro. "Last years dinner raised
a record $1.3 million for scholarships for Barnard students,
and we hope to do even better this year."
The black-tie event will be held at the Grand Ballroom of
The Waldorf-Astoria, Tuesday, May 14, 2002. The evening
will start with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner
at 7:30 p.m. and dancing to the Michael Carney Orchestra.
The master of ceremonies is Anna Quindlen, Pulitzer Prize-winning
journalist, and a 1974 Barnard graduate.
Honorary Chairmen for the event are: Helene L. Kaplan, Of
Counsel, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom; Eugene
R. McGrath, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Consolidated
Edison of New York, Inc.; Samuel O. Their, M.D., President
and Chief Executive Officer, Partners HealthCare System,
Inc.; and Mercks former head, P. Roy Vagelos, M.D.,
and his wife Diana.
