CLASS OF 2011: ANOTHER EXCEPTIONAL ADMITTED ENTERING CLASS

New York, NY – April 19, 2007 – Barnard College received 4,572 applications for admission to the Class of 2011, the second year in a row that applications have broken the 4,500 mark.

Of the 4,572 applications received, only 1,299 young women—28% of all applicants—received the coveted thick envelope in the mail.  This is the fourth year in a row that Barnard’s admit rate has hovered just above the 25% mark and reflects significant gains made in just the last decade and a half:  Ten years ago, the College admitted 40% of all applicants; fifteen years ago, the admit rate was 63%.  Today, Barnard is one of the most selective liberal arts colleges in the country, and the most sought-after women’s college.

“The academic and personal qualities of these applicants simply continue to impress,” said Jennifer Fondiller, Dean of Admissions.  “Nationally-ranked figure skaters, gymnasts and equestrians, certified EMTs, musicians of all kind . . . and many who have served their communities raising money for tsunami relief, working in local hospitals, and serving at animal shelters, among other things.”  Perhaps most impressive though, said Fondiller, is that 83% of the students admitted were in the top 10% of their respective classes.

The College admitted 181 students via early decision, which represents approximately one third of the first-year entering class, expected to be about 555.

The admitted class includes students from 48 states, as well as Puerto Rico, Washington D.C., and 32 foreign countries.  About 36% of them identified as students of color: 19% Asian-American, 9% Latina and 7% African-American.

The Class of 2011 includes numerous valedictorians, captains of sports teams, accomplished performers, editors-in-chief of high school papers, and class presidents.  Other notable admitted students include an eight-time U.S. National Tae Kwon Do champion, an internationally-ranked chess player, a student who performed in Les Miserables on Broadway, two New York Times Scholars, an Olympic figure skater, a producer of seven plays and two short films, and a student who performed in a circus in rural France.

Students must respond to the College’s offer of admission by May 1.

About Barnard College
The idea was bold for its time. Founded in 1889, Barnard was the only college in New York City, and one of the few in the nation, where women could receive the same rigorous and challenging education available to men.  Today, Barnard is the most sought after college for women and remains dedicated to the education of strong, independent-minded women who change the world and the way we think about it.
