Barnard's
CSTEP program is only in its second year, but it's already
making noise at the state level. On April 4-6, seven Barnard
students attended the 16th Annual Collegiate Science and Technology
Entry Program (CSTEP) Statewide Student Conference at the
Sagamore Resort in picturesque Lake George, New York. Joining
over 570 students from colleges and universities across the
state, this contingent was only the second one to attend from
Barnard in as many years and was competing for the very first
time. Emily Kyrillou '08 and Camille Avestruz '09 entered
the Conference's research poster competition, and both received
recognition for their entries.
Kyrillou,
a neuroscience and behavior major, was awarded Second Place
out of a field of almost 60 participants in the Natural Science
category for her presentation titled, Does High Sugar Intake
Lead to Obesity? After graduation in May, Kyrillou plans
to attend medical school.
Avestruz's
project, Growing Up on a Fractal: Roughening in a Restricted
Solid-on-Solid Model of Non-Integer Dimension, received
an Honorable Mention in the Physical Science category. She
is a physics and dance major.
Funded
by the New York State Education Department, CSTEP is an educational
enrichment program designed to help historically underrepresented
or economically disadvantaged students from New York prepare
for graduate programs or careers in mathematics, science,
technology, and health-related fields. Currently, 23 Barnard
students participate in CSTEP.
