Centennial Scholar senior art installation explores the
intersections of science, art, and knowledge

If you happened to walk by Altschul Hall in the evening for a few days during April, you would have noticed a striking scene.  From floor to ceiling, the windows of the Altschul Atrium were transformed into a glowing, larger-than-life, chemistry lab fume hood.  Quite visible during the day, the image of the fume hood glowing after dark made passers-by stop to look, and drew some into the Atrium to learn more.

This giant image was just one element of Centennial Scholar Emily Rhodes Lowry's senior art installation, "immediate causes and invariant relationships."  In this installation, Emily merged her interest in laboratory science (she is a neuroscience major) with her artistic talents, and created an exhibition of original artworks exploring the themes of science, truth, and objectivity.

Emily will be graduating in May and plans to pursue a Ph. D. in neuroscience at the Rockefeller University.  In the fall of 2006 she was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and she was recently awarded the Grace Potter Rice Fellowship for neuroscience and behavior by Barnard's Committee on Honors.

The Barnard Centennial Scholars Program offers selected students the opportunity to pursue courses of independent study early in their college careers. Working closely with mentors of their choice over a period of several semesters, these young women undertake investigations in areas of personal interest that culminate in projects presented to faculty and peers. The program enables students to reach the highest levels of academic and individual achievement.
