Christy L. Thornton '02 Selected 2001 Truman Scholar

'02, has been selected as a 2001 Truman Scholar.
Thornton is pursuing a five-year combined degree
program at Barnard and Columbia's School of International
and Public Affairs. Editor-in-chief of Barnard's
weekly newsmagazine, the Barnard Bulletin, Thornton
has also worked with a variety of public service
organizations, including a networking organization
for members of parliament in newly-democratized
countries and a community gardening support and
education program in the Bronx. A member of Barnard's
student drama troupe, Late Nite Theatre, Thornton
also deejays for Barnard College's radio station,
WBAR.
This
year's 80 Truman Scholars were selected from among
592 candidates nominated by 303 colleges and universities.
Each Scholarship provides $30,000 -- $3,000 for
the senior year, and $27,000 for two or three
years of graduate study. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship
Foundation was established by Congress in 1975
as the federal memorial to the nation's thirty-third
president. Recipients must be committed to careers
in government or the not-for-profit sector.
