Professor Ester Fuchs, Currently in Mayor Bloomberg's Office,

New
York, NY, May 2, 2002Barnard professor of political
science Ester R. Fuchs, who is on leave to work for Mayor
Michael R. Bloomberg, was featured in an article written
by Lynda Richardson in the New York Times on May
1. In the piece, Fuchs discusses her new position as special
advisor for governance and strategic planning and why she
has been uncharacteristically low-key thus far.
Fuchs is remembered in most political and journalistic circles
for her attack on Elizabeth Holtzman, the former city comptroller,
which turned "into a one-sided shouting match."
Fuchs does not remember the event that way, which she says
was an attempt to stop what she felt was an emerging "filibuster"
on Holtzmans part. However, she does admit to getting
into what she calls "the whole outer-borough-Queens
thing."
In her new position, she works with top advisers and deputy
mayors on strategic planning and community building, which
lends itself to her personality and intellectual background.
It has also allowed her to maintain a low profile since
she does not feel any need "to be out there taking
credit for a lot of things. I actually want to get things
done."
