Barnard Calendar Brochures Win Graphic Design Award
Hans Riis, Director of Art and Publications in the Office of Public Affairs, has won a national design award for the College's brochure calendar series, which debuted last fall to promote performances, readings and other events at Barnard, including the new Books Etc. series. Riis' design won a Showcase Award in the 62nd Annual Association of Graphic Communications (AGC) Exhibition.
The brochures were created to highlight fall and spring public events by the Dance and Theatre Departments, the Forum on Migration, Women Poets, and Books Etc. Hans' series was chosen by a distinguished panel of judges, which reviewed thousands of entries.
The calendar series was hailed as having a "vibrant and striking contrast created by custom dull black ink trapped to sheen of metallic inks and gloss varnish," by Hudson Printing Company, which worked with Riis on printing the award-winning project. The brochures were on display last month at the AGC Exhibition at the Xerox Learning Center in Manhattan.
Entries were judged on the basis of print production quality and effective utilization of paper, type, color, binding, function and other production, creative and design elements.
"As we thought about a way to give Barnard's many excellent special events a new and more visually striking identity, Hans came up with the idea of tying them all together through this series while allowing each department or program to present their distinctive offerings to independent audiences," said Suzanne Trimel, Vice President of Public Affairs. "The series succeeds brilliantly and has allowed us to attract new audiences to Barnard's events, notably the Books Etc. authors' series. We are delighted that the design profession has recognized Hans' special talent."
