President
Judith Shapiro will be presented with an honorary degree
from Columbia University at its commencement ceremony
on Wednesday, May 21. She will receive a Doctor of Laws
degree.
"Under
Judith's leadership, Barnard's excellence has grown in many
ways, ensuring its unique role as a premier women's college
that also offers students and faculty the opportunity to be
part of one of the world's great research universities,"
said Lee Bollinger, President of Columbia University.
"Judith's tenure is long on accomplishments. The college's
endowment has doubled; as have the number of applications.
She initiated the review that resulted in the innovative "Ways
of Knowing" interdisciplinary curriculum. She oversaw
the launch of a major campus building plan, increased funding
for faculty research, and established the Barnard Summit,
which has become a prominent public forum on women's leadership.
We are a greater academic community on both sides of Broadway
because of what she has accomplished."
Columbia
University will confer seven honorary degrees and one Medal
for Excellence at Wednesday's ceremony, which begins at 10:30
a.m. In addition to President Shapiro, the 2008 honorary degree
