Renuka Hines CC '08 is this year's recipient of the Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts, and the first dance major to receive the award in its history. Established in 1983 and administered by Columbia University's School of the Arts, the Sudler Prize is awarded annually to a senior who, in the opinion of the Faculty, has demonstrated excellence of the highest standards of proficiency in performance, execution, or composition in one of the following general areas of performing and creative arts: music, theatre, painting, sculpture, design, architecture, or film.

"To see a dance student receive this award is just wonderful," said Mary Cochran, chair of Barnard's dance department. "We are thrilled for Renuka--this is a great honor and well deserved."

Hines' excellence has been recognized by Dance Magazine, which nominated her for a national award as a result of her outstanding performance at the American College Dance Festival (ACDF), a national festival for college dance programs. Hines' solo performance at the ACDF--created by Assistant Professor of Professional Practice Colleen Thomas--was one of fifty dances selected for the festival's gala performance in June 2008, which this year is sponsored by Barnard College and being held at Columbia University's Miller Theater.

"This is the first year that the National Festival will be held in New York, instead of Washington D.C.," said Cochran. "For one of our own dancers to perform at such a prestigious event is very exciting, and even more so this year while we are hosting for the first time."

During her time at the University, Hines has interpreted and created featured roles in both masterpieces and experimental works. In 2005 she was a featured performer in Mark Morris' "Marble Halls." The same year she demonstrated her fearlessness as a performer in "Butterflies from My Hand," a new work choreographed by Donna Uchinozo and performed at Dance Theater Workshop. In Spring 2007, former Twyla Tharp dancer and faculty member Katie Glasner directed a restaging of Twyla Tharp's Eight Jelly Rolls. Glasner recast Hines in the role Twyla created for herself, for which Hines received praise from Robert Greskovic in the Wall Street Journal. Most recently, Hines performed in Bill T. Jones' "Mercy 10x8 on a Circle" at the Barnard@AILEY performance and has since been working with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. After graduation, she will be performing excerpts from Eight Jelly Rolls for the Barnard Reunion dance showcase, and attending the Bates Dance Festival this summer.

The Louis Sudler Prize will be awarded at the Academic Awards and Prizes Ceremony to be held in Low Library Rotunda on Tuesday, May 20.
