Jhumpa Lahiri ’89 Awarded a Columbia Medal for Excellence
Jhumpa Lahiri ’89, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Interpreter of Maladies and The Namesake, was awarded a Columbia University Medial for Excellence at the commencement ceremonies on May 18, 2005. Named by The New Yorker as “one of the 20 best writers under the age of 40,” Lahiri was honored for “sensitively observing the people, places an cultures around her to create great works of literature.” Last year, Barnard awarded Lahiri the Young Alumna Award also in recognition of her achievements in writing.
