BARNARD ALUMNAE RETURN TO CAMPUS MAY 31-JUNE 3
New York, NY – Well over 1,000 Barnard alumnae are expected to return to Morningside Heights for Alumnae Reunion 2007, which will take place Thursday, May 31 to Sunday, June 3.
The fun-filled extended weekend will be packed with wide-ranging panel discussions, lectures, readings, dance performances, campus tours and updates, Broadway shows, yoga, children’s programming, and of course class-specific and all-year events with live music, delicious menus, and great conversation with old friends.
Programming highlights include: Food for Thought, a panel discussion on the intersection of food, health, and politics, to be moderated by Dana Jacobi ’66, award-winning food writer and cookbook author; Fashion Forward, a panel discussion featuring alumnae discussing the fashion industry, from the runway to the boardroom; a book reading by Marisha Pessl ’00 from her critically-acclaimed debut novel, Special Topics in Calamity Physics, named one of the 10 Best Books of 2006 by The New York Times; a dance performance by Taylor 2, which will be moderated by Dance Department Chair and former Paul Taylor Dance Company soloist Mary Cochran; and a live show featuring alumnae storytellers, to be hosted by political talk-show host Ronnie Myers Eldridge ’52.
Architects from the award-winning firm Weiss/Manfredi will also be on hand to discuss plans for the Nexus, the 70,000 square-foot mixed-use building and student center, that will break ground immediately after Reunion.
Several alumnae will also be presented with awards for their distinguished accomplishments: The Woman of Achievement Award will be presented to Dr. Susan Krown ’67, one of the foremost experts on AIDS-associated cancer; the Young Alumna Award will be presented to Amy Richards ’92, feminist writer and activist; the Distinguished Alumna Award will be presented to Marian Heineman Rose ’42, thermonuclear physicist; the Millicent Carey McIntosh Feminism Award will be presented to Ruth Nemzoff ’62, legislator and civic leader; and the Service to Barnard Award will be presented to Bettina Blake ’52, for her tireless years of unwavering support to the College.
The awards will be presented by President Judith Shapiro, who will also deliver a State of the College Address. This reunion weekend will be the thirteenth presided over by President Shapiro, but the first since she announced her plans to resign at the end of the 2007-08 academic year in April. Barnard has thrived under Shapiro’s leadership: the endowment has grown from $70 million to $171 million, and the admittance rate has plunged from 55 percent to 25 percent.
All alumnae are welcome to Reunion 2007. For more information, visit alum.barnard.edu/reunion2007 or email reunion@barnard.edu.
About Barnard College
The idea was bold for its time. Founded in 1889, Barnard was the only college in New York City, and one of the few in the nation, where women could receive the same rigorous and challenging education available to men. Today, Barnard is among the strongest liberal arts colleges in the country, and the most sought-after women’s college. |
