Barnard College to Host National College Dance Festival
New York, NY On June 4-6, Barnard College
will host the thirteenth National College Dance Festival
at Columbia University's Miller Theater. The biennial event,
presented by the American College Dance Festival Association
(ACDFA), aims to highlight the outstanding quality of choreography
and performance that is being created on college and university
campuses today, and will showcase select dances from each
of the ACDFA's regional conferences. Usually held at the John
F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.,
this is the Festival's first foray into New York City.
"We are beyond excited to host the Festival at Barnard
this year," said Mary Cochran, chair of the College's
dance department, which serves students at both Barnard and
partner institution Columbia University. "It is a huge
honor." Cochran is also a member of the ACDFA's board
of directors.
The prestigious three-day Festival, consisting of three gala
performances with separate sets of dances, will include a
wide variety of dance styles ranging from ballet to modern
dance to African-influenced dance. This year, finalists from
almost 30 colleges and universities from across the country
will take part, including Barnard, Middlebury College, the
University of Texas at Austin, Pomona College, and Washington
University in St. Louis. Participants will be competing for
the ACDFA/Dance Magazine Awards for Outstanding
Student Choreographer and Outstanding Student Performer.
Winners will be announced after the final performance on June
6 at the Miller Theatre.
Barnard will be represented by Assistant Professor Colleen
Thomas' highly reviewed solo piece, Paper Wings.
It will be performed by Renuka Hines, a 2008 graduate
of Columbia College and recipient of the Louis Sudler Prize
in the Arts. "For one of our own dancers to perform at
such a prestigious event is very exciting, and even more so
this year while we are hosting for the first time," said
Cochran. Cochran also noted that Thomas, who just finished
her first full year teaching at Barnard, recently received
critical acclaim for her choreography performed at Dancespace
Project in New York City. "We are thrilled to be
represented by Colleen's work she's a superstar!"
