Barnard Alumnae Reunion 2001, June 1-3

New York, N.Y.-- More than 850 Barnard College Alumnae are expected to return to Morningside Heights and Barnard for the 2001 reunion, which will take place Friday, June 1 through Sunday, June 3 at Barnard College. The event will feature an address by President Judith Shapiro, a performance by Suzanne Vega '81, a talk by former president Ellen V. Futter '71, and a memorial service for Millicent Carey McIntosh, Barnard's first president.

President Judith Shapiro, in her State of the College Address, will welcome the alumnae, families, and friends to a three-day-long "Odyssey," as the reunion is titled this year, featuring wide-ranging panel discussions, extensive campus tours and introductions to Barnard programs, as well as celebrations of what it means to be a Barnard alumna.

Dr. Linda Rappaport Ferber '66, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, and Ellen "Pucky" M. Violett '46, Television Dramatist, will be receiving the Distinguished Alumna Award. Dr. Helene Gayle '76, Director, National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention, Centers for Disease Control Prevention, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will be honored with the Woman of Achievement Award.

Some of the highlights of the program include an alumnae showcase on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., featuring an address by Futter, President of the American Museum of Natural History, and a performance by celebrated singer and songwriter Suzanne Vega. On Sunday at 1 p.m., the program will conclude with a memorial service for Millicent Carey McIntosh, the first President of Barnard, who passed away this year.

Panel discussions will be held on Friday and Saturday, in which prominent alumnae and faculty will explore the theme of "space."

June 1, 2:30 p.m.: Reunion guests can choose between two concurrent panels. Panel I: Living Space, Crowded Space, Open Space, will feature Barbara Ballinger Buchholz '71, co-author, The Apartment Living Book and co-editor, The New Homeowner's Handbook: What to do after you move in; Owen Gutfreund, Director of the Barnard/Columbia Urban Studies Program; Joanne Witty '71, President, Brooklyn Bridge Parks Development Corporation; Jessica Bennett Wilkinson '91, Senior Science and Policy Analyst, Environmental Law Institute; and moderator Carole Lewis Rifkind '56, author of A Field Guide to Contemporary American Architecture.

The second panel, Mirror, Mirror On The Wall, Image Vs. Identity, will include Rose Arce '86, Producer, CNN; Bonnie Sherr Klein '61, Filmmaker and Author Out of the Blue: One Woman's Story of Stroke, Love and Survival; Sharon Kleinbaum '81, Rabbi, Congregation Beth Simchat Torah; Fay Chew Matsuda '71, Executive Director, Museum of Chinese in the Americas; and moderator Karla Spurlock-Evans '71, Dean of Multicultural Affairs and Affirmative Action, Trinity College.

June 2, 11 a.m.: Guests will have the opportunity to attend panels III and IV, The Space Between: Feminist Conversations Across Generations or The Political Landscape in 2001: Is There Space For Politics in Our Lives. The Space Between features Gloria Gadsden '90, Assistant Professor of Sociology, Farleigh Dickinson University; Susan Harris Ginseburg '51, Ed.D., Editor and Publisher, Work & Family Life; Vivien M. Labaton '96, Director, Third Wave Foundation; Nancy Kipnis Miller '31, Distinguished Professor of English & Comparative Literature, Lehman College, City University of New York; and moderator Janet Jakobsen, Director, Barnard Center for Research on Women.

The Political Landscape in 2001 will include Elaine Bernstein Bloom '57, Former Florida State Representative and current candidate for mayor of Miami Beach; Ronnie Myers Eldridge '52, Member, New York City Council; Connie Hess Williams '66, Member, Pennsylvania House of Representatives; Polly Trottenbeg '86, Legislative Director, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer; and moderator Liz Abzug, Adjunct Professor of Urban Studies, Barnard College.

All alumnae are welcome, and members of the class of 2000 will be guests of the College for all Reunion events. The reunion is not open to the public, except for the memorial service for the late Millicent Carey McIntosh. For further information, please call (212) 854-2005.
