Barnard College Hosts Conference for Dance Critics, The New World of Dance Writing, June 20-22

New York, N.Y.— Barnard College will host the Dance Critics Association’s national conference for dance critics, The New World of Dance Writing: Coping With Changes in What We See, How and Where We’re Publishing, from June 20-22. The three-day conference will include dance performances, writing workshops, and presentations by noted journalists from The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, and Village Voice.

Mindy Aloff

Mindy Aloff, conference chair and renowned dance critic, who teaches writing and dance criticism at Barnard, said "This year we are examining issues that relate to us as journalists and writers – what better place than Barnard, which is affiliated with Columbia University, to discuss the future of both American journalism and American dance criticism. Barnard has maintained a long-standing commitment to the teaching of dance criticism and dance history, while Columbia sustains perhaps the most visible school of journalism in the country."

The Barnard Dance Department is the University-designated program for undergraduates. Dance history and dance criticism courses are an established part of Barnard’s curriculum along with the respected dance performance curriculum. New programs, such as "Summer Dance at Barnard," further Barnard’s commitment to dance.

Scheduled event highlights include a "Kamikaze Writing Workshop," a series of three sessions during the weekend of June 20-22, directed by Village Voice dance editor Elizabeth Zimmer. This workshop is geared towards producing lucid, interesting dance writing on a deadline and includes attending a live performance. On Saturday, June 21, Victor Navasky, publisher and editorial director of The Nation and George Delacorte, professor of magazine journalism at Columbia, will examine "Cultural Coverage in Magazines of Opinion," and John Rockwell, senior cultural correspondent for the New York Times, and Aloff will discuss "Cultural Coverage in Newspapers."

On Sunday, June 22, a panel on "The Future of Ballet and Ballet Criticism," moderated by Dance Magazine’s Allan Ullrich, will include Wall Street Journal’s Robert Greskovic, former San Fransisco Chronicle dance critic Rachel Howard, TimeOut New York’s Gia Kourlas, and Alexandra Tomalonis of Ballet Alert!, DanceView, and the Washington Post. Several noted fiction writers, among them Adrienne Sharp and Laura Jacobs, will discuss dance fiction writing in "Telling Tales Out of Class: Fiction Writers Take on the World of Ballet."

Dance performances during the conference include Stravinsky’s "Italian Suite," by the Christopher Caines Dance Company, and a performance by Pablo Pugliese and Sandra Antognazzi.

The Dance Critics Association, which is soon celebrating its 30th anniversary, promotes the identity of professional dance criticism through national and regional conferences, the distribution of publications, and promotional services for dance critics.
